4L rebuild update

Had my 997.1 rebuilt due to bore scoring and its back. Havent posted it here before (always on RL) but thought some might find it interesting and I am excited to report on it

Picked the car up this afternoon - whooo hoo

With the cats and headers it sounds much much more aggressive. Deeper, more growly (which I am sure is not a word). I have tried to attach 2 sound files, one from inside the car windows up and one with the driver window down - not great recordings but a hint of whats going on back there. When he fired it up in the shop you should have seen my grin

Now for the driving.....my mechanic drove it for 8 hours with the break in oil and then changed it this morning to the run in oil (Joe Gibbs dino racing oil). I have to drive it for 1600kms and then the oil will be changed again.

Pulls stronger and its faster for sure which is to be expected - better be after all this . But I am not supposed to hit 5k and I wont so I don't expect to see the full potential till I can really get on it.

But so far, having a blast. No radio on this aft when I put 200km on on my way home (some slight detours given its a 20km trip). Just enjoying the sound and some pulls on the back roads!!

Wife and I going on a fall drive tomorrow to put some more kms on - will probably be back for the next oil change within a week ......

Glad to have it back in my driveway

Was it a 3.6 or a 3.8 to start with and did you do any internal mods to the engine while it was apart. Sounds like a local did it for you, so I would be interested in how you located someone that would rebuild on a M96/M97 engine.

3.8 to start. Upgrades done to certain internal parts like piston, rods etc but the biggest performance upgrade was the increased bore obviously

Added headers, cats etc so that frees up the breathing

Yes a local mechanic put it all back together once LN worked their magic. Found him from local guys recommendations, went to look at the shop and talked to him etc. Just not a lot of mechanics have rebuilt 997 engines from scratch

Do you have any expected hp/tq figures on the rebuild? I've been interested in going this route but actual figures have been sparse.

One of the other guys went this route and ran a dyno. I cant remember the exact numbers but we came up with somewhere around 410 bhp

just remenber never keep your rpms steady for to long while breaking it in!! also if engine was built right and tuned it should be ready for high rpms!! the break in is done after 1st oil change !

if i keep my porsche i might end up rebuilding with forged pistons so i can put a supercharger!! i hear stock pistons and rods are not made for boost!!

Is the car lowered? Is this a Canadian car? Why bore scoring?

Well as I mentioned above, LN did the bore work and resleeve. Machined heads were done in Toronto and all reassembly also done here in Toronto. There is a detailed thread on Rennlist in both the 997 and the Cda forum with all the details but let me know if you have specific questions

I have been driving it close to redline on occasion and it really is a lot of fun and pulls much stronger. And with the added exhaust components it really does sound like a beast

I would tend to agree with you that the break in occurs fairly quickly, as does the ring seating. However these were his and LN's recommendations and since he is giving me a 2 yr warranty I am not going to risk anything by going against his suggestions. I will have put 3500 kms on the 2nd oil so expect to go back to synthetic in the next couple of weeks. Wont be any limitations then

I went with upgraded pistons and rods but never considered supercharging. Have fun if u go this route

The car is lowered on H&R. The car spent most of its life in Vancouver but came originally from Seattle I think. The speedo is in mph

Why bore scoring?? Well that is the million $$ question. It appears all M97 engines are susceptible to it and its mostly the luck of the draw. Some attribute it to temps ie I live in Toronto and drive year round but then again cars that have spent their life in FLA get it. Go to Rennlist and on here and search the 997 boards and you will find all you want to know (or probably more then you want to know!! )
