who modifies their car and why?
I have found that everyone has a passion for thier cars, and this can translate to everything from keeping it stock to the most radical of modifications. Thats the beauty of cars in general, that you can make it what you want, or what you don't want.
Personally, I like making minor exterior modifications, and keeping the car as close to original as possible. But................I have learned a great deal from those who continue to make changes and have made a masterpiece of thier cars!!

I'm with you Dr. Jay - I don't understand why people spend money on most of this stuff - including the options list from Porsche. To be different / individual? It's the person that's unique and individual, not the car - and I don't care what people see me driving around in - they are on the outside looking in and I don't care what they think. Marketing people have hit pay dirt with cars these days and the tuners are smiling all the way to the bank.
I modify my car for technical reasons, and only for the track. I tend to leave suspensions alone because I enjoy street driving and am quick enough around the track no matter what the suspension. It's like that scene in Ronin where DiNero says "It's just a tool, I use whatever is available..." in response to Sean Bean asking him "so, what gun do you like..."
My modifications are pretty limited to safety, brakes, and weight / performance. On brakes and weight, here's my list. Better brake fluid, race pads, better rotors (looking for 2-piece lightweight rotors now - nobody makes any yet but PFC is working on it), SS brake lines, lighter muffler / cats / headers (I went with AWE and lost weight while picking up about 35 HP / TQ). It is louder, but I need that on the track with a helmet on and wind rushing by so I can hear what RPM the engine is at for optimal shift points (so I don't have to look at the tach). I find the oem software and intake to be fine. That's about it.
I ordered my 997S with just sport heated seats (manual - heat is for cold track days when windows must be open), fire extinguisher (required for PCA events), and floor mats.
So you are not alone...

I still like someone to explain to me how the Germans found this holder useful...
OK......after all the modding...what the heck does this do to your re-sale value? You have made a car that's for you, but does not appeal to the masses and there for will have a much more difficult time of re-selling. I've experienced this on trade in's, the dealer was less than receptive on a modified car and really was reluctant to accept it. This has always been a problem....so how much of a beating do you want to take on a re-sale/trade in when you want to dump that modded car? Need to consider this down the road....
DD, I would say if you are worried about re-sale, scrapping, too loud and warranty, then you are not going to be a modder. No biggie, just go out and drive it. These car are great stock, too......

Jay, you are right, its not yours until you mod it. I have modded my ducati too and any other vehicle i happen to aquire. for those of you who dont...no big deal, but please...dont judge the rest of us as shallow just because we like to personalize our vehicles. most of us that are serious about modding arent out to impress non-modders or for that matter anyone else...its for us.
I do it because I'm a redneck who somehow got a great job. I like to be faster than anyone else. I like to look at the car on the showroom floor while the salesman is writing up the deal and tell it something like this:
"Don't worry buddy. You've got someone here that's going to buff you up, let you be all you can be, and will drive the **** out of you. We're going to be good friends. You take care of me, I'll take care of you. I'm no poser. I'm going to mod you all the way out, and hit your redline a dozen times a day. You'll see a brother of yours at the redlight and never be humiliated."
