9800 Miles Should I Change Oil ?

My car just turned 9800 miles and wondering if now would be a good time to change oil . I cant beleive Porsche recomends every 20,000 miles .
Has anybody on here used ROYAL PURPLE oil ?
I cant seem to find 0w40 in their listings ?

IMHO, yes. However, you will get lots of different answers. There are a lot of guys who change according to the Porsche recomendation and a lot of guys who change it a lot.

Personally, I dumped at 500 miles and change after every track event- so 10 to 15 times/year. If I wasn't tracking, I would change every 5,000 miles. I am by no means an expert and base my oil changes on what I read and what my mechanic says. Since I do the changes myself, its not very much in terms of cost and makes me sleep a little better.

I also thought Porsche changed to 15,000 miles/change.

I have added 3-4 quarts in 10k miles so the way I see it, I am already changing my oil.... one quart at a time.

My oil changing regimen is immediately after break-in, then late fall right before I store the car for winter. That leaves fresh oil in the engine all winter long (I run the car every couple of weeks until warm, roll it so as to avoid flat spots, etc.). That might mean every 7k miles or every 15k -- depends on how many miles I drive the car in 3 seasons. At 6k miles I'm running about 50/50 street vs. track.

I would never switch from Mobil 1 synthetic to something like RP. You just can't beat the synthetic and I'm sure it's what the factory bases warranty coverage on.

I run car all year round, 6k or so per year. Changing oil twice a year lets me sleep good at night. Stay w manu. recommendation for obvious reasons. Gerry

I change oil about every 7000mi or 1 year (but i never make it to 7000). Sometimes Ill do it twice a year... I do put one of the best oils in though: MOTUL 300V.

Id say you need an oil change.

You're not changing, you're adding oil. Big difference. When you add, all the crap is still in the motor.
I go 5k mi for changes and if it's really dirty I change it after 500 mi again.
This is CHEAP insurance in an EXPENSIVE engine.

I changed mine at 2000 k and now ~ every 5000k miles or minimum once a year.
Oil is the lifeblood of the engine and I like mine golden.
As TT Tommy said above, cheap insurance for an expensive engine.

Royal Purple or Redline Oil are both safe replacements for Mobil 1. They are both race developed synthetic oils designed for the high RPM/HP engines. I've heard RP's R&D is top notch and they have a very strong following with a lot of sportsman race teams. Try and avoid any additives if at all possible. If you by quality oil you won't have to worry about 'helping' it out.

If you want 'cheap insurance' another way to do it is get two half round oil magnets and put them around the filter. There are a few companies out there making these. This will pull in any small particles that may make it through the particulate filter. When I was in school I use to work for a guy who raced hydro's and would cut open his oil filters and show me the particles magnatized to the inside of the filter wall after a weekend of racing. Anyone ever seen oil after you run alcohol/Nitro through the motor? It's a creamy white color..

You're forgetting about the filter.
