Test bypass pipes available for evaluation
I tried a set of TEST bypass pipes on my 997 a few months ago and I'll offer them here with a couple provisions:
- I bought these at Pep Boys for about $25 and I'll sell them to someone here for cost + S&H which wil lvary slightly depending on location and shipping method. PM for details.
- I make no warranty on their quality or installation - you need to be comfortable installing these and working under a raised car or have them professionally installed.
- They're plain coated steel elbows that I used ONLY to test the sound of the muffler bypass for looks, you should locate and buy some nicer looking tubes.
- These pipes fit my 2007 997 C4S perfectly with no modification using the stock clamps to hold them in place (they only weigh a few onces). I make no guarantee that they'll fit yours and I've seen some professional mechanics take days to get aftermarket exhaust parts to fit 996/997s. I attribute this mostly to poor mechanics and poor fitment of the most very overpriced Porsch exhaust systems on the market. these are simple pipe that take make 45 minutes to install at the outside.
- I offer this only as a low cost trial of the sound of bypass pipes to help others here through their exhaust selection decision.
- I only have one set and make no guarantees so please don't offer to buy these if you don't know or appreciate what you're getting in to.
The sound of bypass pipes is VERY LOUD ALL THE TIME. My 18 year old son thought they were cool and so did I for 5 minutes. After that even he wanted out of the car - they drone, are loud constantly at all speeds and are probably not legal to boot. Anyone here willing to pay Fabspeed or anyone else $300 for 2 off the shelf SS elbows that have been polished should contact me, I have a bridge for sale in FL.
Also, videos are worthless for representing the sound of a muffler they bear no relationship to the actual sound and are a complete waste of time except if you want to see what they look like or how they're installed.
I tried quite a few exhausts (with help from some here, thank you) and ended-up with a PSE - again...thanks to those who helped me on this board.

I "tried" fabspeed mufflers...by tht I mean I rode around with a frined with the same car as mine that just had Fabspeed mufflers put on his car. They didn't sound too good to me...too low volume and too low of a note...the PSE sounds just right to me.
O sold these "test" pipes to someone here. If you want to try this yourself, Pep Boys sells the pipes for about $13 each and they're part number 548703 - 90 degree elbo with 2" ID. Basically you don't need these to test the sound of muffler bypasses but without them you run serious risk of heat damage to under body parts in the rear end - these pipes just direct the exhaust and heat out the regular exhaust tip opening in the bumper.
I'm not a lawyer but that doesn't mean I want to be responsible for someone testing a $25 item, mis-installing the item and burning up a wiring harness or otherwise damaging their car or getting hurt - and then blaming me. The cost of the item is irrelevent - remember the space shuttle was destroyed by an o-ring.

no, thats not what I'm saying at all (per my other posts on the subject). The pipes from Pep Boys are just if you want to try the sound/performance of the bypass pipes - they make for a simple, cheap and quick test of bypass pipes.
If you like the sound/performance then much nicer parts would be appropriate (Fabspeed or other prettier 2" elbows available online)...they'll all work the same bu tthe Pep Boys pipes are readily available and cost almost nothing to try out...

SunRacer,
I was your test Fabspeed guy. After you left the shop, I drove around again, and realized the set we had installed was not any louder than stock, and was, as you noted, a little disappointing. A quick call to Fabspeed and it was easily resolved- they shipped me a new, louder set, which is absolutely perfect- much louder and more exotic than what you heard. I've got a video showing stock vs. Fabspeed, but I know you like to hear things in person, and I understand that.
We should meet up again so you can hear it in person- you'd like it. Anytime this week in ATL is good. Offer good for any ATL folks.

I may take you up on that as I'll be around mos tof the week...I went ahead and installed PSE mufflers without hooking them to the Sport switch so they're always loud and they sound perfect to me so it would be interesting to hear the difference...can you email me your contact info when you get a chance please?...
