Please advice from you muscle guys

also you might consider getting one with a clean body for a lot less money. as stated above stock the power was not there, but with todays knowledge, you could be able to build a very strong 400 v8 and get a decent amount of power(i would guess 300rwhp) out of it. if you go back to 76 and the 455 big block you probably could get 400rwhp n/a out of that engine.
with a clean 5k trans am, a new built engine, new tranny, new paint, one could build a very nice powerful muscle car for under 30k i believe. do the mid 70's car have to be smogged these days? if it doesnt that opens up the power options even more!
this is a garage shot of one of the members. notice the 2nd generation trans am on top? sweet!

If you're at all concerned about the future value of your investment, you really want to stick to an earlier car. By the end of 1971, the muscle car era was quickly coming to an end due to pressure from the insurance industry and rising gas prices. By '78, like the T/A you were interested in, the musclecars that Detroit was producing were largely nothing more than a loud graphics package. You can certainly make them go fast, not a problem, but they just won't be worth what a "real" musclecar will to a collector. While your initial buy in may be higher on an earlier car, the restoration costs are about the same, so you'd do better to opt for the more valuable starting point.
If you decide you want a Mustang as opposed to a Pontiac, let me know. I may be parting with my Mach 1 to fund my newest project.

there seems to be alot of interest in the late 70's trans ams these days. the "smokey and the bandit" movies are 30 years old now (????) .... there was a big article in 'hot rod" or PHR recently, and one of the tuners is now turning these cars out.
although the horsepower of these cars were down significantly, GM was making some decent forward motion with suspension and chassis improvements. i don't know that i would drop really big $$$$ on these cars, i think that you could find a pretty decent car for reasonable dollars, spend some cash on a motor/trans up grade, and have a nice, well-built car.
i do have to say that the earlier '70's trans ams really appeal to me more than the later years. that might be an age thing, but i do like the red trans am pictured above. make mine blue with the white stripe!!!
good luck.
