Stalling at High Elevation??
Stalling at High Elevation??
Hi everyone, I decided to take a trip from Denver to BeaverCreek last weekend. At the continental divide, approximately was at 11,500 FT, my car “Stalled.” If I pressed the gas to the floor in 3rdgear going 70MPH and get nothing for 3 seconds and run powerless and rough whenit did kick in? On my way back I noticed some hesitation but not near as much on my way up? Took the car the same route last year with no issues. The only things I have changed are a new exhaust and BMC air filter also spark plugs with a .35mm gap. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!
I will let people with more experience comment, but if you haven't done ECU Flash to the car, I would say something with the Spark Plugs maybe?
Filter and Exhaust are very basic, and I don't think the car should have any problems running stock.
I live at 8,800 FT, and I have no problems, my car is also flashed. However, we have the chance to go down to sea level after 2 hour drive, and some cars have trouble with that. You get more air, also the car runs either leaner or richer etc...
But if you have no flash, I'd say Spark Plugs could cause this? Like I said, I'll let the Pro's comment, but I'm just throwing my opinion

.Thanks Mario! I could see where density would come into play with elevation.
Whats the best method for cleaning it without damaging it?
nsurg, I will be heading up to the same spot this coming holiday weekend. I should have an update soon. Car has ran fine since being at 5,280ft. I'll see very soon though.

Okay, My car runs fine while sport mode is on, even at high elevations. When sport mode is off the car really dogs.? Not sure I have a good explanation for this yet. I have tested this twice and always at the same elevation I see the issue. Went through the same elevation and same spot with sport mode on and couldn't notice anything.
Pop them both out. Buy some "MAF sensor cleaner" from auto store(Advance auto parts and Autozone have it)....Spray them liberally in all the openings and the film...VERY IMPORTANT...Let them DRY COMPLETELY and then re-install and they will be fine.
Good Luck!

Your car should run fine at elevation. I make the run from Steamboat to Denver regularly without issue. Have you scanned your ECU for diagnostic trouble codes? If not, either buy an OBD2 scanner or get it in to a P-dealer or qualified indy shop. I use 3Zero3 Motorsports in Wheat Ridge. Get some objective information before you start putzing with internet remedies since after 3.5 months it's pretty clear that the problem is not going to fix itself. Best.
Thanks Steamboat. Iwas on 3zero3’s website last night. Iwill take the car to them. Did they alsoinstall your evo kit?
No, I had the build done at Evolution headquarters in Phoenix but how that came to pass is a long story well chronicled on other threads. 3Zero3 has since entered into a business relationship with Evoms and there is a great deal of professional respect that flows both ways. Talk to Max at 303 - he and Emery will take good care of you. Best,

Thanks for the advice. Emailed them and Max is calling me tomorrow too speak about the problem.
Thanks Steamboat!
