997... The best ever?

So I was watching a show on Velocity channel this morning called everyday driver or something along those lines. They were driving the new 991 and giving their impressions.

Well they loved the car. Loved the feeling, the handling and the power.

At the very end of the episode they showed a line of every generation of 911 going down the road following each other. Then they dud something that surprised me a little.

Both of the shows test drivers said "as great as the new 991 is, our favorite 911 of all time still is the 997"

I wonder why? More raw without being TOO RAW? Mezger engine? I thought to myself as a 997tt owner...well that is definately good news! Lol

As a biased 997 owner I suggest several conditions that place the 997 above a 991 :

a) the size has grown; the 991 is the same length as the new Stringray. In 1990 the 911 was 8" shorter and weighed 500 lbs less than a Vette. Today their within 0.10" in length and 165 lbs.
b) the cost to enjoy all the special characteristics of the 911 has risen too high, and
c) the engineering due to fuel economy eliminated the hydraulic steering and added the shutdown and coast features.

I agree with 93ls1rx7 : raw w/o being too raw. Luxury wasn't on my list of characteristics I wanted in a car.

I hope to keep my seat in a 997 for a very long time.

Doubt they have driven a 993 then, tough to beat that beauty, especially in Turbo S form.

I have to agree with point b) they are slowly well not so slowly pricing themselves out of the market at 100k for a base 911.

It's strange to relate a 993 to a 997. The mechanics are very different, and from most sources I've read a 993 was a beast to handle ("demanding to drive"), hence not a DD nor even a comfortable touring car.

993 = Great ride and an investment, but would you take it on a 3,000 mile roadtrip ?

In the 991, the engineers fully dialed out the 911 characteristics from the car.

I did lots of long road trip with my father on his 993C4S. I love long road trips.
Last year I did a 6000Km road trip by myself on my 997TT... half of the road trip was with stock power and the other half was with 800hp

The 993 doesn't handle as good as the 997 but it's more fun to drive, it's more tail happy. I will probably say the same for the 964 or 930, when I get a chance to drive one.

My 993tt was a fun, comfy drive, just way down in power and handling vs the 997tt.
A 930 on the other hand can be a beast, commanding 100% of your attention.

I saw that Velocity episode too -- good points about all of the generations from day one. I also just did a PCA road trip today on some fantastic roads in northern KY, and an OVR member brought his 993 turbo, also Guards Red. Quite a stunning car, lowered on Speedlines, with a Fabspeed exhaust howling all the way. There's something for everybody with these superb cars.

When I was at the dealer picking up a new Cayenne, there was a brand new 991 TT-S they had just put in the showroom and it was GORGEOUS. The technology is very cool but as someone mentioned the price tag to play had gotten way up there, so has the weight, so has the size. The beautiful red TT-S i saw was going to be over 200k out the door which is ALOT for a 991. At that price point i would think about entertaining a M4-12C. I think the 997TT is a better looking car and its at the top of the 911 food chain for me with 993tt being the close second.

Possibly with the exception of the 996 to 997 transition, just about every reviewer of a new 911 expresses nostalgia for the outgoing model. While each successive evolution provides both technical and engineering improvements to the 911, these gains come at the expense of some "loss in character or feeling" from the outgoing car to the new (e.g., Porsche engineers solve the wicked oversteer inherent in the powerful rear-biased sports car and reviewers bemoan the loss of the 911's "tail-happy characteristics"...LOL)

The 997 is an excellent platform, (I've truly loved every minute of my ownership to-date), however putting my 997 bias aside I will be equally ecstatic when the 991TTS price point hits <$145K and I slide behind the wheel of my "new-to-me" 991TTS!

Is the 997 the best ever? Sure, until the 991 replacement rolls out then the 991 will assume the mantle of "Best Ever 911", in true zeitgeist of the Porsche 911 reviewer!

how true, the #1 reason i like my 997tt better, bc i own it and can't afford the 991tts. when the 991tts drops to my comfort zone, it will be the best 911 ! haha
