997.1 Turbo just shuts off - ideas?

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has experienced the same weirdness I have.

Twice in the last 2 months, I was sitting at an intersection, idling in Neutral (6M tranny). With no warning, no rough idle, nothing - the car just shuts off, and displays the message "PSM Failure" on the dash display. Car starts right up, and then it's fine - mostly. Additional info:

- No codes seen by shop
- Battery replaced by shop after 1st occurrence - still happened
- First time PSM was OFF, second time it was ON
- First time, PSM button was NOT operational after restarting the car, second time it WAS operational (i.e., you could toggle back and forth).
- With the first occurrence, PSM button did eventually work after restarting the car the next day (so 2nd start after incident).

Mods:

- EVOMsit ECU flash
- EVOMS "quiet" hi-flow exhaust
- Stage 2 Clubsport clutch, with lightweight flywheel
- GT2 Slave Conversion

Any ideas? Anybody experienced this?

Thanks.
Chris

PSM failure means the ECU stopped communicating with that module. Sounds like a problem with the ECU or other module in the car.

Have you checked the PSM module as well as the ECU for faults?

It's the same unit as the ABS controller, located under the trims in the front trunk.

I had this same issue happen to me 4 times. I cleaned out my MAfs and the issue went away. I would sometimes get codes and sometimes not. Car would just stall while idling at a light.

There are ways to diagnose the MAfs with a durametric and checking voltages. MAF cleaner is 3.99 at a local auto parts store and takes literally 10 mins to clean both, so it's worth doing regardless.

Hey thanks everybody - some great ideas here.

Shop checked for codes, found none. I like the MAF idea - that makes a lot of sense.

Are you guys saying that there's a separate place to check for PSM codes (as opposed to "regular" ECU codes)? Clearly, I'm not a mechanic :-(.

BTW, this is a 2008 997.1 with 26K miles, if that helps - can't believe I left that out.

Thanks,
Chris

I had this issue on my 996TT. The venturi tubes needed to be replaced in the fuel tank. Also replaced the fuel pump while I was at it.
