Dual or single mass clutch

Hey guys. I am looking for a new clutch for my daughters A4. All that seems to be available at a reasonable price is dual to single mass conversions. Which got me thinking about our Turbos. Is it dual or single mass? If it is dual, has anyone converted to single mass? What are the pros and cons with either?

I read that dual mass are smoother and transmits less NVH. Then I heard that single is the opposite but pros are that it is lighter and offers better power transfer to the wheels?

You are saying clutch but you mean flywheel...a dual mass flywheel is generally standard equipment because it is quieter and smoother than a single mass flywheel that is very noisy and can be harder to drive...however, the smf is lighter and has less rotating mass so the motor spins up easier...another possible problem is the crank was balanced with a dual mass flywheel...when going to a smf you should rebalance with a different crank pully if possible....since it is your daughters car my guess, considering my girlfriends reaction to the smf in my Cobra is you should stay with dual mass and just put in a new clutch

I'd like to add that the noise introduced due to switching to a single mass flywheel is actually due to the gearbox chatter being exposed. It is never the actual clutch/flywheel assembly that is making chatter noises. Dual mass flywheels handle and stabilize harmonics quieting down the gearbox. We only suggest switching to a single mass flywheel on performance modified vehicles. Assuming your daughter doesn't track the car or modify it with performance and power gains in mind I'd highly suggest staying with the dual mass flywheel on the car in that case.

I'm going to answer this question ..on info based on having multiple dual and single flywheels...and have a rs lwfw on my turbo now...my car is not A daily driver and track it only a few times a year..but without a doubt the single flywheel is a why funner drive then the dual...it's rev happy and feels like there's more spin on the car at low rpms...boost also comes on sooner...to say that the car just leaps off the line is a understatement ...it's the driver enthusiast way to go...if you like rev matching and race car feel its a yummie feeling...on the downside as chuck has stated down the road you would want to offset the light weight with a litter crank pulley..also it's a tad harder to launch but you can make adjustments..and for my car there is a chatter when the heat or ac are on but only from idle to1900 rpms....but you can quite that down by just stepping on the clutch.....any questions don't hesitate to ask...good luck.....

Thanks guys. I was told by the mechanic that we should look at replacing the flywheel while he is in there replacing the clutch anyway. I don't know much about clutch systems so I assumed clutches are specific to the flywheel. Thus, dual mass flywheel needs a dual mass matched clutch set and vise versa, single mass needs a matched clutch set too.

So are you saying that a clutch set would fit into either dual or single mass flywheel? Should I take the chance and replace the clutch set and leave the original flywheel in?

Unless the clutch has been slipping badly or come apart and has damaged the surface of the flywheel there is no reason to replace it...but it is wise to inspect it thoroughly while the clutch is out and you are already there...clutches are not single mass or dual mass...the same clutch will work with either flywheel as long as it is up to the task

If you can reuse the dual go with that...

I went from the stock flywheel to a lightweight aluminum flywheel in my Turbo. Drove it for a few months and then went back to a stock flywheel. Noise made the car sound so cheap from the outside. With 567awhp/615awtq I didn't care about the little loss in power.
