How can you tell if a car is a 997.1 or 997.2?
I have a friend who is looking to purchase a 2007 997. I spoke to the dealer and he doesn't have a clue if it is a .1 or .2. The car is a an automatic that was built in 1/2007. He wants a automatic cause this will be his daily driver and he will be on the cell a lot. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Finally, he says he is not going to mod except maybe an exhaust.

Technically, the 2009 is a 997.2 in every body style except for the Turbo. I realize this is a turbo thread, just wanted to provide more information in case he looks at other variants.

Also, regardless of year (2007-2009) & 2010 above for Turbos, the quickest way to tell is the shape of the tail lights. They changed in 2010.

Assuming it is not a Porsche Dealership? If so, I would certainly not buy from them if they do not know something that simple...

Visually rear taillights are the biggest give away along with larger side view mirrors. Inside the .2 has the PDK and a different PCM.

i think the simplest way to know if it's a ,1 or .2 it to look inside of the engine bay .2 has oil cap on left side

oppose to .1 on right side

or look under car. if engine has an oil pan is .2

.1 looks like this

Gentleman thank you. It is definitely a .1 from the information that was given. Any other things he needs to worry about i.e. transimission issues. He was going to make this purchase yesterday and I told him to hold off until I could get on the forum.

The differenct between line iterations is completely lost on them, lol.
Funny you mention this, but the local dealership's salespeople know very little about the brand, fwiw. Only recently did they even bother to explain to their employees the proper pronunciation of "Porsche."
