Will The Turbo Stay Special?

I don't know if this a profound question or a stupid question, but it's something I've been thinking about the last couple of days.

Now that so many cars are implementing turbos, will modern versions of the 911 Turbo still seem special?

In my mind, there's really nothing more unique than a turbo charged car. But now, that unique experience is about to become a lot more common...

I'm not a big fan of turbo's. There are a few exceptions, the GTR and 911 being 2.
I loved the 911 turbo because it was the brute in the family. Now that every 911 will have turbo, that makes the big boy less special. I'm sure tuners will be increasing the boost on the lesser models closing the gap. I hate what's coming.

I just have a lot of thoughts. For example, this is the first iteration of the 991.2 with turbos. It's already insanely fast. In time, it will be faster, right? It's a 3.0 right? A future iteration will be a 3.2 perhaps. I'm wondering if this means a stock Carrera will be as fast as a stock 997.1 TT at some point soon. And does that kill the novelty of the TT? 10 years from now, if I'm cross shopping a 991.2 and 997.1 TT, how different will they feel to me? It's just a strange situation for Porsche. There's a turbo 911 and a 911 Turbo now. It may come down to looks. The 997.1 TT just looks so exciting and different than a Carrera and that classic Turbo look may be what keeps the value high. But the freakish speed? Maybe won't seem as freakish anymore. Also interesting that the 991.2 is a 2wd turbo charged 911... That used to mean GT2...

The base Carreras will definitely be faster than the 997 turbo at some point. It's inevitable. For comparison, I just saw a video that compared a group of older Porsches on a track. The base 996 was faster than the 930 turbo. Time marches on.

Despite the new turbocharged engines, I think the turbo will remain special. There's much more to the car than the engine. It's the flagship of the 911 line and will remain desirable.

I think the legacy of the turbo will depend on what comes next. If the turbo remains supreme by an unassailable margin then the "turbo" name will keep the cachet. If a 911 S with a tune and an exhaust runs with a stock turbo, well then turbo just won't be very special anymore.

I am dying to own a 930 turbo....even though my 997tt could spank it every which way, but I could buy 2-3 997tt for the price of one 930 turbo in today's market.

Raising the performance bar of the Carrera is not going to be at the expense of the Turbo.

Porsche is KING in differentiating models in their lineup. I do not think they will stop now.

You are looking at it the wrong way.
It is called development.
A stock 991 will probably give an older 993 turbo a run for its money...but, would your rather have a stock 991 or a 993 turbo?

Cars develop and thanks to technology, are continuously getting faster and performing better. Just be glad you have a turbo car before all of them went turbo. There will be faster cars regardless, so that should not matter.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation turbo cars borrow some of the hybrid power train bits from the 918 Spyder.

Speed is one thing but history and pedigree will hold true. I've have a E46 M3. The 335i chipped up can take it in a straight line. That said, the moment you mention M3 to any car buff, their start to twinkle.

The 997.1 turbo will be the same.

The 991.1 and .2 6 speed cars may stay special for one reason vs. the newer Turbos rolling off the assembly line.

There are 3 pedals under the dash!

I've owned three 911 Turbos and one 944. I thought my 930 was quick back then and nothing can beat a 993 TT but my current turbo is quicker. Every generation will be special. If I still have all of them, I will love them the same just like kids. As time goes on, newer technology will be faster

That's my expectation and hope!

I don't foresee myself affording a 918 Spyder...but a quasi Turbo with some 918 tech, after a few years of depreciation...much more likely.

Still, a Turbo is a Turbo. A turbocharged Carrera doesn't do the same.
