Squre opening on front grill of Golf R

Just got a 2017 Golf R. Curiously, it has a square opening on the lower front grill with what looks like a square sensor set behind it. Is this the way it is supposed to be or is a piece of the grill missing?

That's what I was thinking. It is really ugly and breaks up the front of the grill so I thought maybe there was a piece missing.

Yes you're missing the cover. Looks like the sensor there is exposed so be very careful, I'm sure that's an expensive fix if a rock were to hit that dead on.

It is very ugly but it is so, as they say are exposed sensors, you have to take good care of the grill because if they come to break down can be expensive.
