Help me identify this shifter...I just BROKE... :(
So, long story short, I was driving, went from top of 3rd to 4th and that's that.
I thought I busted a shifter cable, but I actually busted the actual shifter.
I am fairly certain this is a Champion Motorsports short shifter - can anyone please confirm?
Quick look at the crack face looks like it took some time to finally fracture and cracks started on opposite sides of the lever. Can't tell for sure from the pictures but it looks like it cracked at some machining geometry cross section change (maybe stress risers from machining the lever).
The smooth surface is the where the cracks grew over time and the rough surface in the middle is the final sudden brittle fracture where there wasn't enough material left to handle the load.
Thanks for the feedback. After doing some research and pulling documents and paperwork, this is a B&M shifter ($ 429 back in 2009).
The shop that sold this part is out of business so I was not able to get a copy of the actual receipt (keep in mind this is a 10+ year old shifter).
I contacted B&M (I would not recommend it if you ever have an issue) and was given another number and after being bounced around for 10 minutes, I was finally able to get a hold of someone, who put me on hold yet again (47 minutes: I am glad I can multi-task at work - good JESUS!).
They confirmed this was a B&M item but since I did not have the original receipt, and since the shop that it was originally purchased from, could not be reached, then they could not honor their "lifetime limited warranty".
When I told them I just wanted to purchase the handle since all the other parts were intact, they told me I would have to talk to someone else...FML. LOL.
Metal is metal, and it wears. The shifter is about 10 years old and has close to 22,000 miles in it.
I think I went from 2nd into 3rd and noticed something was wrong even though the car was accelerating just fine. When I was getting ready to hit 4 and notice the shifter handle felt looser than Pamela Anderson, I knew there was a problem...fortunately, even though I was through twisties, there was no traffic or anyone around to make the situation more uncomfortable.
I am still debating what to do, but I have everything turn apart now.
I also think this has been tweaked further as that red piece looks aftermarket - it is red anodized aluminum and is where the "joint" of the handle fits in - and it is secured against this threaded piece on the end of one of the shifter cables which have threads, but the threads are not used - instead it has 3 little allen wrech "screws/bolts" that secured it in place. I am surprised that actually held together better than the metal shifter. Crazy.
Well, if you have access to someone with a CNC machine, you get get one made for you to replace the broken piece.
On my list is a Numeric Shifter (cables first though - after my cup cable screw up). I have heard nothing but good things about the company and the product.
Tailwag - the red piece you're referring to is a shifter linkage, people upgrade them because the OEM one breaks where it clips into the bottom of the shifter and falls down, causing you to not be able to engage any gears... so the billet version you have is an upgrade.
