Angry damn oil change!!

The place I took my car for 30k service does not know how to do an oil change. As has been reported so many times with 993TTs, a botched oil filter install (wrong one, too loose) leads to heavy white smoke on startup and an intercooler and hoses chock full of oil.

They better not give me a run around when I expect them to fix and clean up at no charge. Feel like cursing. Won't.

When they thought my 97TT had 12 spark plugs, I should have run when I had the chance.

Grrrrrrrrr. Grr.

We've got the "Self-Appointed Dimwit" and "Village Idiot" on this tread.

Yea, it was a Porsche shop.

It is not much of a Porsche shop if they can not do an oil change and get it right. If they are the stupid, then I would also doubt that they drained your turbos, of if they did I would doubt that they used new crush washers as they are a different size than the other ones.

12 plugs.. Unreal.. I would look at getting my money back as I would not let them touch my car again.

Well, so far the 1 certain thing is that the car was overfilled. I'm still making smoke, but not as much as the first time. I'll find out if it's actually improved or not tomorrow morning since the car has been sitting for several days now.

I have a lot more educating I have to do for myself, but I will inquire about draining turbos and crushwashers.

viperbob, you need to leave CA for a while and spread some of your wisdom over my way.

ViperBob, for the uninformed, what are you doing when you drain the turbos....

and do most shops now use these crush washers?

Bill,

The TT cars have an oil reservoir on each turbo. When doing an oil change, these should also be drained. They each hold about 8 ozs of oil. So by draining these, you are taking out an additional 1/2 quart of old oil. The problem is, that the plugs on these are a different size than all of the other drain plugs on the car. So while shops may have the proper crush washers for the rest of the car, I have found that they do not have washers for the turbos. So it is "let's just reuse the ones that came off" approach...

Well, I have stopped smoking (cigarettes, too) over the past week, so I'm far less worried now. Bob, I hear about how many people you show how to do things to... you should make videos for us clueless East Coast folk.

Another thing you want to check is to make sure the amount of oil drained from 1 turbo is not significatly more than the other.

If it is, it could be an indication of failure of the sealing rings in the turbo --> turbo failure --> turbo replacement --> $$$.

I wish I would have know about 6speedonline before today. I had a similar experience with a shop that was highly recommended. Can you believe they actually told me they all smoke! Hard to believe some shops are still in business putting our such garbage.

Gee, and I knew about 6Speed and Rennlist before I got my car, did all the research and stuff, blah blah blah. But sometimes it doesn't matter.
