This is a very good question. I have always been afraid to use any cleaner on it because I do not know if its painted or not.

Basically, I removed the console panel (2 screws). Placed a few towels down on the border of the console to protect the leather and stereo panel. Disconnected all the electrical lines to the console. Unscrewed the 3 star head screws which bond the ring to the console panel. Unsnapped the inner ring which holds the leather pouch of the shifter. To polish I used a Porter Cable 7424 and Mothers metal polishing something- you can also do it by hand. The ring is now longer an eye-sore and very uch a bright spot of the interior.

Disassembly was 10 minutes (keep in mind this is my first time). Polishing 20 minutes (possible in 5 minutes but I wanted to do a thorough job). I could have clear coated after polishing. Reassembly was 3 minutes.

Do you have pictures of the ring polished? Did you use metal polish or paint polish? Also did it come out in a true mirror finish?

I always thought it was painted and clear-coated.

Use Nu-finish ... I use Nu-finish on all my windows to improve water beading & etc. Its a non abbrasive clear synthetic polymer so it won't harm the finish. Think of it as a pseudo-clear coat (works great on keeping brake dust off wheels too). I never use nu-finish on paint, but on everything else its great.

As previously stated, I will upload pics nxt Monday. I am currently working out of town. Yes, it now looks like chrome.

It is actually metal (very solid). I am not sure if it was ever originally clear coated.

For windows, Gtechniq G1 is the way to go, loads of videos on Youtube.
Offers amazing results and lasts.
