What does the Aston Martin VIN serial number tell you?

I'm in the market for a Vantage, and I noticed that the last 5 digits of the VIN appear to increase with newer and newer cars.

A couple questions related to this:

1. Is it true that the serial number is sequential for each AM model line? I noticed Vergis' Sig states his car is the 46th produced: is the serial number the method of determining this?

2. Are there any records that indicate the build month/year for each serial number?

3.Does a site exist for Aston Martin (or can we build one) that contains the type of information found on www.bmwmdata.com. In this example, type in a VIN for a Z4 M Coupe and it tells you things like:
-Original options / colors that were spec's
-What month/year the car was produced
-How many cars were produced in that color and that combination of colors

Thanks for the input!

Yes the last digits signify the build number.

Mine has the mercury grey with kestral tan interior which was the same combination as the first car that was unveiled.

The build date [month/year] is on the sticker in your door jam. The last 5 are the sequential number for your model. The rest are all decoded in Grant's book on pg 238/9 but basically they tell you everything.

To decode
SCFAD02A96GB04439

S = UK
CF = Aston Martin
A = 2+2
D = LHD Auto
02 = Convertible 2+2
A = V12 AM04
9 = check digit to verify VIN [no idea]
6 = 2006
G = Gaydon
B = DB9 Volante
04439 = unique individual serial number

In reality there are 2 MY, 06 and 06.5, the last being the one with the holes for the windshield, and from the above link one cannot discriminate...anyway on pistonheads I saw that one DB with a chassis n° over 5000 was built before feb 06 (supposedly MY 06.5 starts then...), so I got my answer!

There year is broken down in quarters, mine is a 10.25. besides having another resource your build sheet is the only way to tell the quarter, which is important because any changes will be introduced on a new quarter. And only the build sheet will tell you all the options your car has.

But I never knew that VIN decoder was on the site. It's a lot easier than decoding it using the book
