Tieing down a Vantage for transporting
Tieing down a Vantage for transporting
So I'm trying to be proactive here. If the day ever comes and the car strands me or needs to be flatbedded to atlanta for repair.
Any threads on how to properlly tie down these cars, I did a search on the forum and didn't find anything.
I know when the car came to me the transport company used the tie downs that go around the wheel/tire. I note the manual specifically says not to use any of the suspension and such. Haven't paid much attention but if joe blow comes with his flatbed, what do I tell him in terms of anchoring? Shouuld I just buy a set of the slings and keep em in the trunk?

I would also like to know the approved method to trailer a Vantage. I own a car trailer for my BMW race car and plan to trailer my Vantage to a dealer for service intervals. Not seeing any good anchoring points under these Vantages... Is anyone training these that can provide some insight???

They will strap your tires hopefully. That is the right way to do it.

Thanks,, I will be the one tying it down and loading it...
All - I guess there are no other ways to tie them down other than the wheels??? I don't want to damage HREs or change back to the stock wheels for transportation...

When I bought my Vantage it was shipped to Ogdensberg NY and I trailered it back to Canada myself . I tied it down using fabric ratchet straps heavy duty 5000lbs threaded through the wheels and pulling away from all four corners .So effectively the spokes in the wheels were taking the strain . Worked good for me and the straps didn't mark the wheels .
When I got the Beemer from the US the shipping co had straps that went over the top of each tire front to back and tied it down that way . It worked well but when I first drove it after getting it off the trailer it felt like the wheels were square as the tires were a bit deformed from the strain . Once the warmed up a bit all was ok again .

You can strap through the wheels as in the picture but you should have the strap at the bottom of the wheel. if it is at the top and you hit a good bump the wheel can slip and thus loosen the strap. The straps should also be in an X attach the right front of the trailer to the left rear tire and so on. Eddy
Prpperly securing any exotic
As a Transporter who has a Porsche I would never put anything through the rims due to the fact they mar easily...Wonder Why?
The way to do it is around each tire in a straight line that hugs the tire closely leaving the cars suspension to bounce around. You do not want any slack around the tire because you can either loosen or break the ratchet on the strap. The other type of strap is called a basket strap that basically cups the tire and bringing the end out at a 90 degree angle away from the tire .
Fyi If I saw such a car as the one above strapped as it is I would quickly take off my white gloves and slap the person who did it with them......LOL
I can get any car anywhere in the world

Tie downs
There are special straps available for fitting to standard 2 inch tie down straps which fit around the wheels rather than tying onto spokes which is poor practise. They are about 18" long with an oval ring at each end. They fit along the strap. The long strap comes up from the anchor point, then through the first ring on the short strap then bring the main strap around the back of the tyre and back to the front and through the second ring on the short strap and then down to the ratchet clamp. This system is used by professional car transporters as it doesn't damage wheels or suspension. I think I got mine in Machine Mart.
Make sure you have your eyelet tool that screws into the front bumper in the car.. In the event of break down, it's likely a rollback wrecker will be dispatched and he's going to need that to winch the car on.. I guess this is very obvious but I thought worth mentioning.
