If it's a sportshift, dealership's AMDS can provide a read out on the clutch. The cost of the OE clutch job is around 5-6K

clutch life indicator

i talked to a serv. advisor at bet hills aston martin and he said the indicator readings are VERY inaccurate…he wouldn't trust the reading … there is no window or other way to check it other than to open up the car….

on the vantage S…7 speed auto clutch…is it better to manually up/down shift using the paddle shifter vs. using it as a full auto ? (i.e. to extend the clutch life that is…. ? )

Not true
In AMDS you can see a wear index and detail of the kiss & bite points
All of which will give a good indication of the state of the clutch
An ANY version of ASM it is best to avoid D (full auto), much better to use the paddles with a slight lift on up changes.

The dealer guide for sportshift recommends manually shifting... I let my car rest for about 30 seconds before driving after starting for the clutch 'kiss' which measures clearance.... I suspect premature wear might be not allowing time for this adjustment.

A SS car with 30k miles of being a DD... I'd bet the clutch is about gone. Would not buy that car without either a new clutch or money/discount for one.

Any dealer can get the values on AMDS but, wear indication can only be accurate if you have the values recorded when the clutch was brand new. Not every car is the same so good or bad can still be a estimate. Its still a wear item that depends on before and after readings. Dealer dosent want to say it's all good, when they aren't 100% sure. Plus it depends on how the TCM views the measurement.
