Maximum Spacer thickness on stock studs?

Hey guys,

Finally drove the V12S today ... WOW! (full write up coming soon), I love the stock wheels in person, they look waaaay better than the pictures, I just hate the offset.

I want to improve the look of the stance, but I also am weary of purchasing aftermarket lugs and lugnuts.

What is the maximum thickness spacer I can safely use on stock lug studs? 5mm, 7mm, 10mm?

Just curious...

Reducing usable threads is far more concerning than aftermarket lugs and lugnuts. Why are you wary of them?

Strength of the studs is unknown compared to the OEM ones, and the labor to install them is both costly and potential to be installed incorrectly can have bad consequences.

I do understand less threads is always a concern but is there some extra room to work with or are the stock lugnuts just way too shallow?

Pop one of your lug nuts off and see how much lug is exposed?

Lugs are just press-fitted bolts. They have strength ratings like anything else.

Do you really think that a 5 or even 10mm difference in track is visible?

I fitted 5mm spacers to my car it it looked so much better but be warned the OEM lug nuts are not threaded all of the way through the nut so I would advise changing these so you are not losing the amount of threads that are holding the wheel to the stud.

Find some decent lug nuts that are threaded all of the way through and you can go 5mm and I would say 7mm are easily possible too.

A comparison pic.

With the smaller spacers you also need to consider how much of the hub lip is exposed to secure your wheel in place. 5mm spacer still leaves around 6mm of hub lip exposed so still a hubcentric setup.

If that change pictures is only 5mm, that looks like a substantial difference. I could always get meatier wider tires to make up the difference (once the corsas wear out I can switch over to PSS to give me another 5-7mm on top of the spacer.

I plan on tracking the car once I get it so I cannot go all the way to the edge to make them flush because I need to leave some clearance room to allow for full suspension compression under turning.

AM v12v - so you are saying 5mm is totally safe on stock lugs and studs? Also where did you purchase yours from and what brand are your hubcentric spacers?

007, the pictures above are a bit deceiving because of the different angles at which they were shot. This creates the illusion that the one on the right is much further inset versus the left because you see a lot more of the wheel well. Go grab a ruler and look at how small 5mm really is. We're talking about somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch. Do you really think that this difference will be noticeable by anyone besides yourself when you are done? Is the effort, expense and safety risk really worth it for such a miniscule difference.

007 Vantage, everyone will have a different opinion on this. To walk around the car it looks noticeably better on 5mm spacers and would probably look better on a 7 or 10mm setup.

A few owners walked around my car after the spacers were fitted and all commented that they didn't think that 'just' 5mm would make so much difference.

As long as you have enough stud length and you are running a hubcentric setup, do what you want to do.

I have a new set of wheels coming in the next week or so so will be changing my setup again.

You could also accomplish the same look as a 5mm spacer by going up one size in tire cross-section.

Forgot to mention that I am running Michelin Pilot SS and they fill the arches a touch more than the Corsas.
