Liquid Moly

Has anyone tried using the 10w60 Liquid Moly as an alternate engine oil , or is everyone sticking with the Castrol liquid gold $$$

Based on info I stole from this post:

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...ml#post2309150

And this:

http://www.liqui-moly.us/liquimoly/p...cument&land=US

Oil requirements:
The WSM specifically states:

Engine Oil Specification
10W-60
Authority: Standard
API: SL/CF
ACEA: A3/B3/B4

Oil 10W-60 has both API and ACEA and therefore meets more demanding tests than either API or ACEA oils alone.

With an explanation from Irish:

SM came into affect around 2007/08, Vantage engine was adapted with 2005 products so SL was in affect.

SM supercedes SL...the "S" stands for "Spark Fire Engines" which is gasoline engines, the M and L I'm not sure but a wild guess would be code requirements and newer year build.....the "C" in CF stands for "Combustion Fired" aka Diesel.

Castrol's oil meets SM for it was probably re-designed past 2007/08..it's changed name so any times, tweeked probably formula as well. I'm sure if some one had a bottle of TWS from 2005 it would show SL..versus the newer TWS sporting SM on the bottle.

The above two bits coming from here:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ngine-oil.html

Looking through the BMW forums, a lot of people seem to love the Liqui Moly oil.

I found this explanation for the differences between API SL and SM:

The differences as published by the API are as follows:

SM is limited to .06 min/.08 max percent phosphorous.
SL is limited to .10% max phosphorous.

TEOST is limited to 35mg max for SM
TEOST is not rated of SL.

Sulfur is .5% max (0w/5w) for SM
Sulfur is .7% max (10w) for SM

Sulfur is not limited for SL.

Engine test for SM is sequence IIIG
Engine test for SL is sequence IIIF

SM limits viscosity increase to 150% max at 100 hours.
SL limits viscosity increase to 275% max at 80 hours.

Cam wear using sequence 4A limited to 90 micron max for SM.
Cam wear using sequence 4A limited to 120 micron max for SL.

Bearing weight loss using sequence 8 is 26 mg max for SM.
Bearing weight loss using sequence 8 is 26.4 mg max for SL.

There are numerous other differences but they are measured using different test sequences and therefore not directly comparable.

There is no published limit on the level of zinc additive that I know of.

Based on the above, AML requires at least API SM in the V8 Vantage. Oil ratings are backward-compatible, so SN (the current spec) can be used in place of SM and SL. SM can be used in place of SL. SL cannot be used in place of SM or SN.

Unless Liqui Moly gets re-rated at a more current spec, it is only rated at SL so doesn't meet the factory's SM requirement for our engines.

Okay, last thing... according to this, the specs for the SN (updated) version of the Castrol oil have changed.

Ok so for non oil science people is 10W60 synthetic whatever the name on the bottle not 10W60 synthetic ??
Has anyone on here used the liquid moly ... Personally I think AM just sets up an agreement with Castrol to use there oil exclusively and then Castrol jacks up the cost of the product accordingly as they think that anyone that owns an Aston will always go with "what the book says" or will always go to the dealer for the work .

The main thing is that Aston has specified API SM oil for the V8V. Liqui Moly's 10w60 is SL, so it doesn't meet the SM requirement. It basically boils down to the quality of oil. SM specification is more stringent than SL.

FWIW, I've been using BMW M TwinPower 10w60 for the last year. It's the stuff supplied to BMW by Shell after Castrol lost that contract. It's rated at API SN.

Just found a good deal on the Castrol liquid gold on Amazon . Case of 12 litres for 136$ U.S. So my search for an alternate can continue for another season unless I keep finding deals on Amazon/Fleabay.

I'm glad you posted this up, I started digging into various types of oil to try to figure out an answer. The Castrol oil apparently is worth the cost - the additives seem to warrant the price.

I've been burning through more of the Shell/BMW M Power oil than I care to, and I'm planning to go back to the Castrol Edge oil.
