Key Fob - I finally understand it

More than a few of us have complained about the range on the fobs, I've joked I almost have to be inside the car before it works. But after 18 months I accidentally now understand it, and it's like everything else about the car.

It all about the pace.

Push the button and hold it for a second. It works flawless every time from 35 feet, but you have to hold the button, not just press the button like every other car I've owned. Now 35' isn't going to help you find it when you can't remember where you parked in a huge lot, but no more frustration pushing the button 3 times until it finally works standing right beside the car.

I'm going to try that tomorrow. For the record, I'm 72 months in and didn't realize that. Just thought the fob was like the rest of the electronics (i.e., archaic and temperamental) Still by far my favorite car, though.

Ok. I will definitely try that when I get home tomorrow.

But now that you are the key fob sage. Answer this question. When I bought my car last September, I was given three keys and two key fobs.

Only one of the key fobs worked with the car. So I replaced the batteries in the key fob that was inop, and it still does not work.

Does the key fob need to be reprogrammed by the dealer? Do they somehow lose their codes when dead?

Mark

I'm definitely no sage, I discovered this going cave man trying to strangle my fob to make it work!

But as I understand you need 2 programmed keys to self program any other keys. If you only have one you need a dealer to program a second, but once you have 2 you can use those to program as many as you want

The procedure goes as follow:

1- Start the car with the 1st FOB (Already programmed to my car)
2- Start the car again with the 2nd FOB (Already programed to my car)
3- Start the car yet again with the 3rd FOB (Newly purchased used Crystal FOB)

all this has to be done within 10 Seconds or so.

Holy smokes it works sitting on my couch, thru the wall, I can see the lights reflecting thru the window. And it's probably 20' away. Perfect every time. Hold until you see the lights and you'll know the pace you need with yours to walk away and not have to look, which is a lot cooler than standing by your car pushing it 5 times trying to make it lock, and then complain about it

Awesome! Going to try it now! Thanks for posting, had the car for about 2 months now and i changed the batteries hoping that would help me not look like a moron having to walk closer to the car to lock it when i was like 5 ft away from it... on another note, a beep sound would also be nice....

The last couple days are the only time I've walked away from my locked car looking cool! Before that I'd stand there trying to strangle the fob cursing at why the thing wouldn't work and looking like a spastic dork.

I should have titled it

mine still needs to be within 16 ft to do anything. i am going to try changing the remote battery this week to see if that makes any difference. but yeah, this is embarrassing. i find myself too often have to go back to check the door **** and it's STILL OPEN!!!.

I just did some testing and, my 35' spot is no longer working. Might have been the wind that day.

From directly behind the car I'm getting about 20'. From the sides and front it is right about that 15/16' mark. I swear, 1 step forward, works perfect, 1 step back, does not work. But in the "zone" it works every time. As I put the key in my pocket, press/hold/lock, every time. So I'm very happy I no longer look like a dweeb with a temperamental remote trying to get my car to lock, I look cool!

It still works on my couch, I measured, it's actually 13' so well within the goldilocks zone.

Anybody else dislike the adds within the thread? Off to the side they can be ignored, but, maybe that's the point of intruding in the thread itself.

It's moved to the bottom now so, tolerable.
