Making a gt4
Making a gt4
I recently got a 2009 v8 vantage and want to make it into something close to a gt4. I realize that I cannot get to where pro drive does but hopefully can get close. As there are certainly some challenges to face I wonder if anyone has been down this path before?
I started with GT4 brakes from one of the Aston Martin Race teams:

I then went with Velocity AP for a more aggressive tune, KW coilovers and with redpants lightweight battery.
I still want a luxurious ride so I took a detour with HRE wheels and Aston installations CarPlay module.
For the future I want the OZ magnesium wheel and racing slick 18" square set up and maybe a few more cosmetic racing bits but I've been enjoying the car as is.

That is a beautiful car. I would think that I will probably use most of your ideas but I am willing to go a bit further. It seems like it might be too difficult and expensive to get down under 3000 lbs but want to give it my best. It looks like removing some of the systems, like air con, all the power locks, certainly airbag and control, and changing the ignition to something more suitable to a competition car is not trivial and probably requires some creative solutions to keep the car running. I would suppose most of the interior will need to go and don't think it needs cats. Some type of silencer to run some tracks would be required.
My brother and I just finished up making a spec boxster to luckydog race. It was kind of a fun project. I have no idea if the vantage will be anything but a track car but just have always liked them and everyone around here has a gt3 or even gt2 porsche so it would be fun to have an aston. I also have a 2017 v12 so am not to concerned about gutting the v8.
I also saw that the early cars ran stock calipers and it looks like they like the pagid 29 compound. I assume the ceramic 2 disc is the clutch to run. Don't think I would spring for magnesium wheels but like the 18x10 and 18x11 sizes.

Real GT4 available
Seems like a reasonable option if you were looking for an authentic GT4.
By the time you add all the extras to your vehicle, you might well be within range price-wise...

Weight loss will be a fun challenge. I'd check the redpants website and see some of the other things Richard has done to lighten the car. He's been able to reduce weight quite a bit while still keeping the car street legal and driveable, but also track ready if needed.

I had looked at a few GT4 cars in that price range. I don’t expect it to cost any less to do it this way. Usually a car like that has no vin number so it would be some effort to license, not sure that a car with a cage is too appropriate for a trip to the store but if you want you can do. We drive the porsche around sometimes and it’s pretty obnoxious but occasionally it’s a hoot. Also there is something about doing it all yourself and knowing every inch of it that is kind of satisfying. Originally i was going to get a gt3 cup Porsche. Then a Gt4 Aston and now I have another street car. Not sure I can justify it much but it’s done
i raced an open wheeler for 10 years or so and remember that sorting out the shocks was one of the most difficult things to do. You try to collect data on accelerations and velocity and constantly go back and forth with the shock builder. I would be real interested in getting an appropriately set up shock and spring combo that was double adjustable. If someone has a source besides pro drive I would be most interested
certainly the Aston is more complex than the Boxster but we disabled most of the warning lights and systems unless they were used to run the engine. Undo the control module and remove the light if required. Also stripped out a lot of wires. Kept the lights but not much else. I also know they run an aftermarket Bosch abs control and some kind of traction control. I was just going to disable tc and try the stock abs. It works okay on the Porsche.
I am sure I will have lots of questions as I dig into it. In the meantime your suggestions and feedback is much appreciated
