Oil level engine hot & cold delta
Oil level engine hot & cold delta
Hello,
I used to check my oil when my DB9 was cold and sitting overnight. However, I have a new parking space and have to park my car on an incline now so it’s difficult to check the oil when it’s been sitting overnight and get an accurate reading.
Going forward I’ll need to start checking my oil during refuels or parked on a flat surface for 30-60 minutes.
Does anybody know approx how much of a delta there is in reading the oil dipstick after the car was running and has been sitting for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour?
I think in the past when I was tracking the dipstick would read about 1/2 qt lower if the engine was warm and the oil didn’t all flow back down yet but not entirely sure.
Thanks!

Would be great and super helpful if you could grab a few more data points!
In your example, do you have a datapoint point on what the dipstick was reading prior to starting it up? Basically I’m just trying to figure out how much oil is hiding from the dipstick reading if I start the car up and run it for a couple min.
thanks!

Not sure if it answers your question perfectly, but on my DB9, if I start my car and and move it and shut it off while cold and then check the oil (let's say it's at the MIN mark), after letting it sit for 30 minutes it'll read halfway between MIN and MAX. It moves that much. I can't tell you the delta between an immediate hot read and the read after letting it sit 30 minutes, but I could test it out if you want some data. Just let me know.
