3-speed Vantage

You may already have guessed from the title, but there's good news and bad news to this one.

The good news is that 2nd gear stopped grinding today when cold. Well, after making a grinding noise slightly worse than the previous ones.

The bad news is that I no longer have 2nd or 4th ;( I can still drive around short shifting between 1st and 3rd, and reverse is also OK, but there is no engagement in 2nd or 4th (haven't tied 6th). I'm in touch with a local specialist trying to figure out the next steps, but I wanted to check here to see if anyone else has had a similar issue, and if so, how you ended up resolving it. I'm hoping this is simply a shifter cable, but with 1/3/5 OK and 2/4 not OK I'm not optimistic.

Update - experimenting with the shifter with the car off indicates that 2nd is definitely not engaging / popping out, but 4th will stay in if I give it a bit more effort.

It's a 2007 V8V with ~41K miles from new.

I read something ( on this list?) that a company repaired these gearboxes. Do a search.

HCF Autosport in Texas has anything one could need for a 6 & 7 speed transaxle.

@hsm precision @embdenb @J doubleU Thanks for the inputs guys. The car is due to be picked up and towed to Peninsula European Car Service in about an hour, so we'll see how it goes once they get a chance to diagnose it. The good news this morning is that when running the car will stay in 2nd and 4th, though there isn't as much feel as 1st or 3rd. Reminds me of when I had a misaligned shifter cable on a Cayman, so hopefully that's a good sign. The AM Tech at Peninsula European also wondered if a recent gear oil change at another shop used the wrong gear oil.

Anyway, I'll keep this thread going as I've always found it helpful when other people have documented their issues (and resolutions) here.

Problem solved

Turns out it was the shifter cables after all - one was broken and one was mangled. The working theory is that things weren't aligned correctly after a clutch replacement.

I'm picking it up tomorrow after the new wheels get installed. Do new wheels count as a 'while you are in there' kind of job 🤔?
