The "wave"
The "wave"
Hello All, still new-ish to the AM forum, I did a search (found little), so I thought I would ask the board: Is it appropriate/normal practice to wave to other Aston Martins on the road? I learned this from my Porsche Dad (912) when I would watch him wave to other Porsches as he would see them in the wild, I know the topic (and practice) continues today within the Porsche community (911 --> 911 or 911 --> Cayman, the general feeling seems to be that anything further in the line-up would end up waving at everyone on the road, HaHa), it causes me to wonder; is this a practice in the Aston Martin community? Just for fun, I waved at a DBX yesterday with no response (not surprising), but what do you think/do? Thanks, just curious-- KH
I learned to wave from when I had my 911.
With the Aston it has yielded mixed results in terms of reciprocity. Plus it's very rare I see another Aston in the wild while I'm driving mine (as I drive it very rarely at this stage of my life with two very young kids).
I'll keep doing the wave here in the Bay Area if I see another Aston while driving mine!

BITD ('70's) it was common practice to wave to other MG owners on the road. don't see much of that anymore, but then again, i haven't owned an MG in decades (until recently) nor seen many either. aston's are even rarer. i think i've seen one in three years, a DB11, and i was not in my aston at the time. although, i do have a motorcyle...
and it appears that many motorcyclists do wave to each other. i have to admit that i'm not much of a waver, myself. but like another poster, i will occasionally give a thumbs up to someone driving a nice old car. i think the last time i did was to a guy driving an orange 1970ish 2002 BMW.

Thanks, it sounds like many of us are like-minded - I'd say I see one about every 3 weeks, reflex is always to wave, but then I realize that I'm driving my wife's car or my puppy-mobile . . . which would make no sense to the other driver, HaHa
Totally, no matter what I'm driving I will give a thumbs up to any cool-car, I think adoration is appreciated by all - I tend to wave AM --> AM
I wave or flash the headlights (whichever is easier at the moment) to any exotic type car I pass. Virtually always they do the same.
In metrowest Boston, I have been at a light next to an Aston DB7 coupe in the same color as my Vantage and the older gentleman driver did not look at me at all! A Vanquish was behind me at a set of lights on Rt 9 and drove like he didn't see me in front of him either (in Rapide). I was at a small C&C in Sudbury and the one other Aston (AMR1 replica) on display wouldn't acknowledge or talk to me when I was there in a DBX. People are weird.
All the times on the Cape where I have crossed other Aston drivers, they have been as excited as I am to see another Aston.

While I think it's part of the culture associated with some cars to wave, I think it's also connected to the prevalence of certain cars and models and also the different cultures of different communities.
Here in the American Midwest, I've never come across another Aston while driving mine (I have passed a few when driving my daily driver). However, I've encountered Vipers, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and the like in my DB9, and more often than not we'll wave to each other. It tends to happen even with Bentleys and Rolls Royces. I've had Porsches, Corvettes, and BMWs wave to me, and while I'll respond, I seldom initiate. I think that people who drive special cars often respect other vehicles and a wave to their drivers is a respectful acknowledgement. The problem with Porsches, Corvettes, and BMWs is that it often takes an insider to know whether a car is "special" or just another piece off the production line.

I've never felt the need to wave at someone else because of the car they drive. My wife drives a Wrangler and she hates that I refuse to wave to others when I'm the one driving it. To each their own I suppose. Also, I have seen only 1 Aston Martin on the road while driving mine, so it's not a common occurrence around here.
I've "seen" 5 in the wild now, only close enough once to see the driver. Was about 5 cars behind a woman in a topless DB11, Eventually all but one pulled off and I had a left turn lane at the red light ahead so I pulled up beside her and stopped. 40'ish, way above my pay grade, she looks over and I smiled and nodded at her. She got big eye excited with big smile when after a second she realized I was in an Aston too. Drove up to the light and made my left
