Friendly Reminder To Replace your thermostats

I got a code on my new to me car driving home from work.

OBD code P0128 coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature.

Thermostat gasket was roached. Nbd, I hadn't seen it in the cars history so I expected to do it for peace of mind.

Had to replace the one in our 2007 V8V when we purchased it 5 years ago with 28k miles. No codes but the temperature gauge wouldn't get above 1/4. The rubber gasket looked like yours.

06 29k mile v8v

I am not sure it's ever been replaced before. The paint marks on the bolts to the flanges were still aligned. I'm not sure if those are factory or not.

Replaced the one in my 2007 when it was in to have the shifter cables replaced. It had always been slow to come up to temperature, so the shop recommended a new one.

I just did a PM on mine since it was 7 years old. One piece of advice. I moved the cyclone oil scavenger around a bit to get access to the thermostat cover. Did not think much about it, but when everything was back together there was a small oil puddle under the car.

The oil return pipe that goes into the front of the engine at the lowest point had become partially dislodged. They used a John Guest push fitting more commonly seen on compressed air system. The sealing o ring can get old and weep. In my case it had been torqued and pulled.

I pushed the pipe back, cleaned up the mess and did a warm cycle to check the coolant level that I hoped might reset the o ring as well. Sort of worked, the drip is now a drop every 24 hours. I am actually going underneath this afternoon to see the current status. It MAY have stopped.

if not, I have the replaced kit for the fitting and I can charge it out. I will have to drain the oil from that scavenging sump and hope that after breaking out the old retaining barb ring, reassembly goes smoothly, or else bad things…..

In any event, try to minimize the oil scavenger wiggling around the thermostat area while changing the thermostat to avoid unobserved motion lower down.

Philip

Took my car out from winter and same deal. Temp won’t rise past a quarter. Told the dealer to take a look and they said it’s the thermostat. Asked if it’s common (based on annually seeing it on this forum) and they said nope very rare they hardly see it.

Wonder why they don’t see it yet everyone here seems to.

Pro-tip:

When installing the new thermostat use the thermostat housing to compress the spring while you rotate and seat the locking lugs in place.
