Repairing Navigation screen that will not open

2007 Vantage. My navigation screen will not rotate open. It moves a bit, struggles and then returns to the closed position. Diving into this project I found the reasons were somewhat complex and varied.

I know this is an issue for some owners, so I thought I would post this process the moment I was finished with fixing it.

For those interested in the process please PM me for the website address.

My 2007 won't open either, but I kind of prefer that. Nothing good comes from that screen

if the intent is to NOT use the nav, a waterfall w/out the cutout can be purchased, i think. it will clean up the looks of the interior and put the spectre of its inadequacy out of sight and mind for good!

IMO, google maps is superior to most of the nav units even on modern cars and has a reliable voice interface 'ta boot! the only way it could be better is if one's phone had a 12" screen.

Can’t argue with that. In my case I had my front and rear cameras connected to the navigation screen and they are vital to me when parking the vehicle.

I have my front and rear cameras connected to my rear view mirror. Nice and clean and closer to the eye.

I upgraded my screen with a stand-alone Garmin Nuvi 2689LMT back in 2016 and with the annual map upgrade I still enjoy the latest Garmin upgrade with a fairly modern look. But back on topic, I remember replacing the motor with a torqier version while at it (and keeping in mind the added weight of the Garmin + bezel) which has made a difference in opening and closing times.

I have not gotten around to creating a link detailing the installation of the cameras. I have 50 or 60 photographers in my computer detailing the process, but finding the time is a problem.
Now that you have expressed interest I will try and get it done (smile)

The Garmin units are OK. I updated the maps on my '11 Virage to the 2023 maps yesterday as I find the speed limit display useful but they keep lowering them in my area!
