Have thought long and hard on changing the interior color on my 06 titanium silver db9. The original interior color is moonshadow. Which may have been nice in its hay day. But really not for me. And I think clashes with the silver. I’ve been a bit obsessed with chancellor red. I ordered an updated armrest/cup holder in chancellor from a vantage donor car. My armrest came broken elbow weighted from po. So that was on my list of fixes anyway. And I wanted to actually see chancellor in person. Originally I wanted to completely remove the interior and take it to an upholstery shop. And have it redone. I’ve gotten quotes of $10k. Not worth that kind of money to me. So I’ve ordered leather dye from Colourlock in chancellor. They actually had Aston colors available. And will be attempts dye resto in the coming months. I will update with pics as I move forward. But wanted some criticism (why, I don’t know) because I’m pretty much going through with it. Would this devalue the car being it’s not “original” anymore. Oh and I wanted to add that the po claimed to have spent $7k redoing the dash leather and ski slope leather. So technically (although decently matched) not original anyway.

 

This will absolutely destroy your resale value. If you love this car for life, then I say go for it. If not? It's a fiddly job with lots of prep. Quality results are possible, but that will vary.

 

Really? I mean I don’t know about loving it for life. But I planned on keeping it atleast a few years. I think I can achieve a high quality color/finish. What are we talking for resale? $20k or less? At that point wouldn’t even be worth selling unless I was really strapped for cash. As it sits it only has 29k miles. But one small accident on the carfax. That states it was less than $1k in damages.

 

After a quick search, let's say your DB9 is a $50k car. Now pretend you are a buyer who comes across your car for sale with an accident on the history and DIY'd color changed interior. What are you offering? Now factor that scenario 3yrs from now with more depreciation/miles/wear . I'd wager you'll take a 20-30% hit compared to clean un-modified car.

So, pay the $10k now for a professionally re-trimmed interior, or wait and pay that $10k in diminished market value later after you've also poured your own labor into the experiment. Things to think about?

 

Not everything is about money. If you want to change the color, go for it. Let us know how it goes

 

I'd look for a parted out interior and use that as a swap. It'll still be "factory" and you have the old interior too!

 

Interested to hear and see how things go on this project. I imagine your result may differ from OEM Chancellor Red given the age and color you are starting with. Some easy to access or remove small pieces should be a relatively low risk start.

 

Good luck this is a big endeavor. I admire those willing to take on big projects. Hope you keep us informed and bring your challenges here as you go. I'd pitch in with advice where I can.

Thanks fellas. Appreciate all the feedback. Will definitely keep you guys posted as I move along. I’ve sourced some chancellor seats from 09 vantage but they’re asking too much imo. It’s a flood vehicle and the mechanics under gotten wet and are rusting. Assuming the modules are also bad. 2500 for the 2 seats. Told the seller he’s going to sit on them himself at that price. First pieces I’m starting with will be those small rectangles in the rear seats to test.

 

These cars are as much about emotion as they are about price. If you feel no emotion about the interior color, then change it.
The rules for dyeing leather is the same for painting a vehicle. Preparation is the key. You need to strip the old wax , sweat and dirt off the leather before you start the dye process. Are you going to spray, wipe or rub the dye in? Decide on an application method and use that for all the pieces.
