2.0T Engine and Oil Light

I have a Q5 with a 2.0T engine....every month I get the low oil warning and have to take it to the dealer to top off. They say this is normal. That's hard to believe! Anyone else have this issue? What's the cause? Possible solution? Driving to the Audi dealer every month is a hassle.

First of all...You don't know how to add oil to your own car??? This is something you really should know how to do.

Second, are you sure it isn't leaking?

Third, you need to know how much oil is being consumed over how many miles to determine if this is a problem. it is normal for a car to consume some oil, some more than others. The manufacturer will have a recommended rate of consumption before they try to repair or replace an engine and you need to know what that level is while you are still under warranty. Begin to have this conversation with the Service Writer and see where that takes you. You may have to be persistent to have it addressed.

it's somewhat normal. My A3 has the 2.0T also and they burn oil like crazy. I probably have to add a quart every 5k miles (I do oil changes every 10k).

Using better oil will help a little. I use Shell Rotella 5w40 full synthetic because it's cheap and really good, or you can go with redline etc...

If you look up the tolerance for how much it can burn it will scare you a little.

gaspasser...thanks for the input, but I do know how to add oil! It's a company car, so it all has to be documented. Taking it to the dealer is what the fleet co prefers. Seriously, you don't think I would check for leaks before posting on here? You average ONE post a month and you chose mine to insult me? Really?!

You sound like the kind of guy who deserves monthly trips to the dealer.

It happens with every turbo car, don't worry. My B7 2.0T does not though? Some do some don't. My buddies 335 burns oil like mad. Don't worry.

Most owners' manuals have this information. You should find it under maintenance or oil service. You can also call your local mechanic, who resets oil service lights everyday on a variety of models. A dealership will certainly have the information; however, finding someone in a dealership who can translate it effectively may be difficult.

VW engines are known to burn oil. I think the accceptable rate is one quart every 1k miles. To me, that's outrageous.

I would recommend a slightly heavier weighted oil. Something like 5-40 or 10-40 or even 20-50. choose based on VW recommendation. manufacturers usually recommend 2 weights for normal and severe duties.

Read the Wheels section of the NY Times today on line. there is a recall for the 2.0 turbo for excessive oil usage. It is the oil regulator which causes a problem in stop and go traffic. Also requires a new oil seal. So this is now a recall.
