yep i have many times, what you need to do is lift the ring around gear shift slightly, whats happening is the chrome ring sits down on the micro processor board and puts trans in limp mode.

now before you pull it apart, just to verify if you open the sliding door in centre console and lift the wood upwards the console will start to lift and will take the chrome ring away from the gear shifter micro processor, drive car and trans in dash should stay as normal, once verified remove the ring and put fibre tape not or electrical tape on the rings feet, this will prevent it from short circuiting.

Should I put a spacer or anything to slightly elevate it?

once you lift it out you will see what to do,there are 4 little feet and also make sure you note how it comes out ,it does have to be put in a certain way.

Any tip on best way to tackle ring removal? Do I need to remove the entire would centre first?
Or the ring pops off with a panel puller

you should be able to get ring out if you just lift the rear of console and get fingers under ring and pop out.

popped the center console out. make sure you have a vacuum, it was pretty dusty in there.

i think this was the issue, exposed circuit board.

seems like they already tried a fix with felt on the feet

when i popped it off, be sure to clean the wood under the ring. was pretty dirty

what i did is covered the board with electrical tape,

hope it works, car fired up right away, and be sure the mark how that ring is mounted because once it out its a ***** to get in the right way.

also fixed the loose armrest

i could only get to one bolt, put some loctite and snugged it down,

i will keep this thready update if the problem happens again, if it does i am going to re pop that chrome ring and re felt all the tips and maybe try some liquid electrical tape all along the board.
