Engine out, 40 hours of labour?

Hi,

My 04 just got a check engine light came on. The indy tested it and determined there is vacuum leak.

The labour to take the engine out is 40 hours and the total cost of repair is about $10,000.

Does that sound right?

Dealer charges around $4000 for the same job on a 2007. Been there, done that

Odds are it is the infamous 'false air' bad hose just above the transmission. Very common problem with early models up to 2008 or so.

What is leaking that requires an engine removal? Did the Indy do a smoke test to find the source of the vacuum leak?

The car is 2004 and about 43000 miles.

Should I take it to the dealer and get a second opinion?

I already did a $6k suspension job last month and spending $10k doesn't sound very appealing

Have the indy write down WHERE the leak is. Then take it to the dealer.

$10k is outrageously high if it is the typical false air leak. As for the overall ownership costs, it's an early model Bentley so.....

on early models 2004/2006 the only leak that needs an ''engine out" is, as Steven says, the hose located above the gearbox.

Bentley Monaco is quoting 4800€ for replacing it.
and Bentley Monaco is about 30% more expensive than any good indy....

10k$ is ridiculous....

I had to take the engine out of my 2005 to change the primary cat and fix the transmission air leak and the job took me roughly 10 hours. I bet thers are shops that will do it for a lot cheaper. 10k sounds way too much!

The main dealer in Cheshire UK did mine for around 7k USD equivalent.
Sounds way too high to me.

Are they the same as 3W0612041BB?

Most of these parts vendors ask for your VIN in order to ensure they are providing the correct parts.
I have had very good luck with Scuderia Systems in the UK. Here's a toll free number: 1 888 527-9396. I deal with Chris (chris@scuderiasystems.com) Their service and prices are very competitive.

I got the same quote from the dealer and spoke to my friend who works for them, he said that dropping engine is a lie and all dealers replace the lines with out engine drop. He's doing mine right now with out droping the engine about 5 hours of work and no where near 10k.

That is a very serious accusation. Can your friend tell us the procedure for this without dropping the engine.
