'09 Flying Spur "3rd Brake Light" broken
#16
Let clear the air and get this one straight.
Lilo1980 has a GT, Cduluk1 has a Flying Spur, BentleyF has a Flying Spur, and I have a GT, SO as SWFLBT23 stated "The flying spur 3rd brake light is different. It is mounted in the car at the base of the rear windshield" SO the FS has the 3rd BL INSIDE the vehicle and therefore is NOT susceptible to rain unless the rear windshield is leaking, and even then I doubt that the rain would bother the light itself, but instead the connection, Cduluk1 stated for his FS "It got worse after we had several days of heavy rain." which is odd being as stated the light is inside the vehicle, I would check that you have no leakage cduluk1, otherwise it looks to be just coincidence with the rain, for the FS I would check the connection whether it be in the trunk or under the parcel shelf.
Now for the GT, this is what happens when it is subjected to the weather and cracks allowing water to infiltrate the light itself.

How do I get it out?

I had opened everything up from the trunk about a week ago, loosened the screws holding it in place, and found this length of "foam" beneath the light was damp. Maybe it dried out and that's why it began to work again? Moisture was indeed built up in there. Here are some pics:
I need to access the plug where it connects to the car. I bet it's corroded. But i can't access the wires from the trunk. Who the heck designed this thing?? any thoughts?

I'm of the belief the VW Group designs their products with a bare minimum of acceptable warranty while maximizing service costs.... pricing factory parts as high as possibly deemed justifiable.

As Swflbt23 said " It is removed by removing the rear seat and parcel shelf."
Post a pic of your rear seats, are they bench or buckets, power seats, and I will try to walk you through.

Okay I'm on the road right now so doing this from my phone, so here's the situation, I don't know if you have power seats or not in the rear, but regardless being it looks like you have a bench with possibly lumbar support and heated seats, you would pop the lower section out, just lift up in the front both sides and you pop it up, before you completely remove it you will disconnect connections for the lumbar control and the heated seat control, once that lower section of the bench seat is removed then you will see either 2 or 4 anchor bolts at the bottom of the vertical part of the back seat, once you take those anchor bolts out then the backseat will lift vertically straight up to unclip the clamps at the top so you lift it up and then it'll become loose you pull forward then there will be electric connections in there I believe because you have power headrest I am not sure, you will then see some screws holding your rear parcel shelf in place, I do believe on the flying spur you will have to remove the two side panels that go up to the headliner that sit on top of the parcel shelf in order to remove the parcel shelf, those are held in by clips and most likely one nut on each side behind the little tag that pulls out that is named airbag, on this last bit with the clip in the airbag I am not 100% sure as I do not have a flying spur but that is the way the GT with setup.

Thanks Johnny for the description! I haven't been able to do it yet, but will this weekend. At the moment the 3rd brake light is working... I guess I need to wait for it to go out again before I can diagnose
