Advice: Whining/Humming/Hissing sound on 2006 Continental GT
I am looking to buy a 2006 CGT and is most worried about the vacuum leak. I noticed a distinct hissing/whining sound when test driving, and when idling. It is quite obvious and is coming form the USA driver front side. (see my attachment)
It sometimes goes away after a while while idling (but maybe 3-5min?) but was quite distinct constantly in the 5-10 min of driving. It is not super loud, but definitely hearable when we turn down the A/C and turned off the radio. I may need more test, but it is clearly there every time I start the engine while idling.
My questions are:
- Does that sound like a vacuum leak issue? or something else?
- Does this sound like a vacuum pump replacement issue or a engine out repair?
I also checked out 2 other 2005 CGT just to compare, 1 had that sound but only hearable from outside (not inside the car), the other does not have that sound.
Recordings are not great, but would appreciate any information at all. Thanks a lot!!!
The noise you are hearing is probably coming from the vacuum pump which is under the rear of the front fender (where you indicate). Under normal conditions it will run intermittently, but it should never be on all the time. At a stoplight, put your foot on the brake and the pump should come on for a brief time. Once you remove your foot from the brake, it should stop shortly thereafter.
The easiest way to determine if you have a vacuum leak is to run a comprehensive smoke test. There are a number of videos on the net that show how it is done.
Hi I have just noticed that your having one of the problems I have experienced, the noise is identical to my noise in your audio clip only when I accelerate about 30 mph onwards.

The noise is most likely, as PMS mentioned, the electric vacuum pump.
My story was that my car had the vacuum hose leak. That caused the pump to run more or less constantly. The pump gets hot and eventually it gets noisy. Mine gave up the ghost and seized up.
The vacuum hose repair is an engine out job.
The vacuum pump is fairly easy to do and it's an AUDI A8 pump.
Vacuum lines are not an engine out job. BY removing the wheels and unbolting the suspension arms, you can access the steering rack fairly easily. Remove shields and lines, and
Remove the steering rack and you can access the vacuum lines. I’ve done it 1/2 a dozen times.

Good luck.

it IS NOT an engine out job. 3 hour job. I’ve done it 6 times.

Does method include the lines that go over the transmission on the 04-06 cars. I watched a video from Presidential Auto Sales out of FL (car dealer who did a Bentley buyers guide) and they said the same thing, IE that you can replace the vacuum lines without removing the engine. Im in the research phase of picking up a first gen GT and the vacuum lines potential issue is a $8k pause. If it does include all the vacuum lines, that would be great.
It is indeed an engine and transmission out job for 2004-2006 GT, one can not service the vacuum lines and solenoids over the top of the transmission without dropping the package.
Here are the cracked lines at the stainless steel four way fitting over the transmission on my 2005 with 8840 miles at the time.

No disrespect @bigreddon ,
But, if you have done this job 6 times already, then you have either worked on only late 2007 or newer GT/GTC's or Flying Spur's, or, you have only fixed half of the issues with the lines on any 2004-2006 GT, as these 2004-2006 GT's have more plastic lines down the back of the engine and over the top of the transmission to the solenoids, these lines fail just like the lines along the firewall.

Thanks Johnny. The tinkerer in me says there has got to be a way to retro fit a 04-06 car without pulling the engine. Im thinking it might be possible to purchase and install the 07+ parts while leaving the parts on the transmission to fade away. Im just looking at this from a $$ perspective as the parts of the 07+ vacuum system retro fit must be less that an engine R+R. Looking back at the overhead shot of the transmission in your post #7 from this thread https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ose-issue.html there are 5 steel tubes and 2 plastic ones that come from the engine compartment. I just noticed there are three sensors as well tucked back there, so the wiring would also have to be shortened or lengthened depending on where their respective modules live IE Boot or engine compartment. After reading through most of your content and videos, you are the guy who would know if this would be possible/probable/impossible.
