2004 Bentley Continental GT Airbag Control module fault
Hi,
I have just purchased a 2004 Conti GT with a few issues that I am working my way through. The main one I have is the airbag light. I have the Ross-Tech software which has confirmed that the airbag control module is 'unhappy' and needs replacing / reprogramming. I have searched the forums as well as the wider internet, and the limited information I can find suggests the module is contained behind the stereo in the centre console. I have removed the console trim plate, as well as the stereo unit, and have reached a dead end. I cannot see the module anywhere, and without removing the entire dash I cannot see a way to remove the structure to get to what is below to keep digging. Any suggestions on where I go from here?
And I've just answered my own question. I fired up my old laptop, changed the year to 2011 and opened the workshop manual. And quickly wished I hadn't..
Remove rear seats
Remove front seats
Remove rear centre console
Remove front centre console
Remove Dashboard
Remove footwell panels
Remove HVAC ductwork
So it looks like a mountain of work to reach the control module. Has anyone actually done this themselves, and did you have to do all of these steps?
Hello @Ghibli_Cup Steve,
Are you sure it needs replacing, was the vehicle in any accident were airbags deployed, does it just need clearing and reset of crash incident ?
Edit: Also, anyone of the seat belt tensioners, side curtain airbags, either front seat side airbags, passenger side dash airbag, or the steering wheel airbag faults would cause the airbag light to come on, and depending on where your vehicle is from it might have knee airbags, so check for connections, also please tell us what codes/faults the scan showed. End Edit.
If you do have to remove it, I would start at popping out the rear seats, they are very simple 10 minute job, then the rear console wood trim pulled upwards from the rear and out, next the front center console wood trim, then the front center armrests, I would not remove the front seats just yet, next remove the rear console, you have to split it from the front console by turning the locking screws on the inner sides were they join together, the a few more pieces to get the front console out, then pull the HVAC ducts running to the rear out by pulling reward, then see if you somehow can get at the module, I would NOT pull the dashboard completely out or at all, I because of the year of vehicle, would cut a portion of the plastic dash out in the area of said module to access the mounting nuts.
Here are some pictures and the link to my rebuild.
This response is really appreciated (and scary)...
To answer your questions, I am not aware of the airbags having been deployed. When I purchased the car there were a number of issues, a number of which could be explained by the fact that the batteries had both previously gone flat, and the dealer I purchased the car from (main Jaguar dealer) had replaced them with new ones that were too small - 760CCA vs 900CCA. The hope I had when I got it home, was that putting in the correct size batteries and resetting the system might clear the codes. This worked for a number of codes but not the airbag. I've run a Ross-Tech scan a number of times and have been unable to reset the codes:

This has led me to the belief that I need to replace/recode the control module. I had been searching for a long time to try and find some pictures of the module and it's location within the car, so these are going to be invaluable.

No update so far - moved house so the car has been put into storage until we get sorted and can start work on it. Hoping to get it fixed before the end of summer.
Not yet sadly. Still in storage while the house move gets finished. I have found a company locally that can do the reflash of the control module: https://safeandsmartdrive.com/airbag-module.html
With a bit of luck I'll be able to get to it this fall.
I am ready to have someone tackle this with the first goal to get the SKU# off the Airbag Module in the car as I am told there could be multiple types of modules. I talked with SafetyRestore.com and they mentioned they only reflash modules if the car has been in a crash where mine has not. I am getting Code 00003 Defective Module. My question is, can a used airbag module be used or do I need to get a new one? One person mentioned once the VIN has been burnt into the module it can't be changed? Either way it sounds like it needs to be programmed. Any idea on what kind of equipment that requires and if it can be done once its installed in the car?
