Hello all, I am new to the forum and have never posted before, but have enjoyed reading the forum. Purchased a 2008 CGT /Mulliner spec in 2018 with 19,000 miles sapphire blue with saffron interior. Lovely car. Since purchasing the car I have removed and rebonded the headliner, changed spark plugs, replaced the fresh air and, recirculating servos along with annual oil changes. About 500 miles after the last oil change check engine light came on. Plugged in the Ross Tech VCDS and up came several DTC codes related to engine and MAF sensor faults.

I cleaned the MAFs with MAF cleaner, cleared the codes but the check engine and codes are back exactly the same. So my questions are:
1) If a MAF is bad which MAF is bad, or do you replace them in pairs?
2) Do the MAFs need to be coded to the vehicle or are they just plug and play?
3) After the last oil change I discovered that I overfilled by about 3/4 of a quart, could that be a contributing factor?
4) Both tail pipes are a little "sooty" rich or oil?
5) Do the Bosch MAFs on Rockauto ( identical Bosch part #) work fine or do they have to come in a Bentley box?
5) Will driving the car with the check engine light on damage anything until I get this figured out and corrected?
Engine starts and runs fine, however on 2 occasions after the spark plugs were changed, and after the last oil change immediately after starting the engine ran rough with a surging/ bouncing idle and then smoothed out. Eventually the CEL came on.
Now it starts and runs fine every time but the CEL is blazing away.

I cleaned the MAFs with MAF cleaner, cleared the codes but the check engine and codes are back exactly the same. So my questions are:
1) If a MAF is bad which MAF is bad, or do you replace them in pairs? Your Fault shows "G246", so that is the driver side of the vehicle MAF sensor, standing at the engine facing it, it's the right side... 😃
No need to replace in pairs.
2) Do the MAFs need to be coded to the vehicle or are they just plug and play? Plug and play.
3) After the last oil change I discovered that I overfilled by about 3/4 of a quart, could that be a contributing factor? I would not think this to be your issue.
4) Both tail pipes are a little "sooty" rich or oil? Most likely running rich as the check engine light is on, therefore running on a set map to protect itself.
5) Do the Bosch MAFs on Rockauto ( identical Bosch part #) work fine or do they have to come in a Bentley box? While I like to use OEM Bentley parts, it's not an issue to use non Bentley branded replacement parts, just get good quality.
Also, some replace the whole MAF housing and sensor, whereas I have seen just the sensor as a replacement piece for a third of the cost.
5) Will driving the car with the check engine light on damage anything until I get this figured out and corrected? No, not really for a short time, but, do not drive if the check engine light is FLASHING !
I would take a good look at the MAF sensor pins at the connection point, be sure that you have no corrosion, and that the plug is seated properly, as you have an Implausible signal fault.
Any help much appreciated! I would also have a look at your batteries, as with engine off you only have 11.68 volts, whereas when running you can see 13 plus volts, the battery should be at 13+ volts without the engine running.

Good evening all! Well having survived last weeks fridge Texas temperatures, I was able install a new passenger side MAF and air filters. Cleared the DTCs, car fired right up and sounded great followed by a short drive. After starting the second time the CEL came on after few miles. Same codes as before. Checked for corrosion on the connector but none evident, nice shiny copper. Plan is to change the batteries next.

Hello @AAV8OR ,
I read your PM, one would think "Implausible Signal" to mean something electrical, as myself and many others on different sites dealing with VAG vehicles such as Audi, VW, Porsche, etc.have, I just read two threads from different people with the same issue as yours, and they to replaced MAF and checked the connections and associated wiring, only to find out that it was vacuum leak, or air inlet leak, and being that you had the air intake filter boxes, and associated air hoses off, along with the intake manifold, I would recheck the following, I would actually remove the offending side's air filter box and check the gaskets on both sides of the MAF, also check to see that the air inlet funnel from the air filter box to the turbo air inlet is seated properly, maybe even pop the funnel off to check the seal on the turbo side, my picture shows a green seal where I have a red plug in the inlet.
I mention these as these are the items others had issues with once the engine got warm, and would then throw a cell, one also lost boost because he had leaks on both sides of the turbo, at the MAF, and at the intercooler, have you had any other work performed in the area of the intercoolers, like headlights or bumper, anything under the engine compartment ?
Thank you for the quick reply! I will check all of those connections that you highlighted again. No headlight work however when I replaced the coolant I think I removed the lower intercooler hose for better access, maybe I didn’t tighten enough?
The previous owner installed a K 40 radar detector and I believe they removed the bumper fascia. Will check for vacuum and air inlet leaks and report findings.
Shot in the dark, bit had something similar once on a an Audi motor. Turned out to be a gunked up throttle body ‘flapper’ valve that wasn’t closing all the way and remained open just a hair. A nice cleaning fixed it up. Unfortunately, don’t recall the error code but was showing up on vcds scans as an MAF error.
Hello all again just an update on the CEL. So after removing the passenger side airbox again checking seating and sealing of the turbo funnel and MAF seating, all good. Replaced both batteries with Die Hard AGMs. After starting the car it ran poorly was in some kind of a limp home default mode and the EPC light came on this time, codes from steering angle sensor (G85) supply voltage terminal 30, ABS, cold start temp sensor, throttle drive #2 (G296) , control module malfunction DBW throttle monitoring to same engine DTCs previously reported, car ran poorly in some kind of limp home mode. Cleared all the DTCs went for a 45 min. drive and it ran well. After a second start cycle the same engine DTCs came back on related in my first post, ECU2 G246 MAF. Took the car to an independent Bentley tech and he said the problem was with the driver's side MAF connector (locking tab broken) and loose, not receiving any signal when checking the "blocks" He replaced the drivers side MAF with the passenger side MAF that I replaced with a new Bosch. Cleared the codes, and so far the car is running just fine.
So apparently ECU #2 or bank #2 is the drivers side? (on a left hand drive vehicle) according to the tech at least. I have been working on the passenger side which according to him was the wrong side! :-( Oi.
