Hello all,
I have a leak from the w-12 oil pan gasket - it almost looks like there is an actual gasket currently there. Not sure, but I believe this is suppose to be sealed with an RTV compound. Can anyone verify this, Can I use an off the shelf american compound or does this have to come from VW/Audi/Bentley. Also, what is the torque spec for the lower pan

VW used what they refer to as a liquid gasket, and make numerous warnings that the engine should never be supported on its sump, other than by the four designated points which are designed into the casting for the purpose.
This is why it amazes me to see so many people who have dropped their engine whilst it is resting on blocks of wood and the like.
Maybe a previous owner did this and that is why your sump is weeping.
To answer your questions:
There is no traditional gasket.
The quoted sealant is D176404A2 which should be applied in a 2-3 mm bead 1mm away from the inner edge of the casting.
The M6 bolts are torqued to 10Nm.
