Front wheel bearing/hub removal - bolts in the back!
Hello everyone-
My ‘06 Spur (35k) has a failing front right wheel bearing. I found new hub/bearing assemblies and once I removed the rotor, etc, I found that the bolts that hold the assembly on are impossible to get to with my socket set - they are blocked by the knuckle.
So my question is to anyone who’s done this R/R - how do you get to those bolts?
Hello @notwise ,
Please be sure to brake the CV axle (driveshaft) bolt loose while the vehicle and tire are on the ground, the parking brake set to on, to keep the vehicle from rocking back and forth as you try to brake the allen bolt loose.
Otherwise you will have a hell of a time as I did braking that bolt loose while doing the job of changing out the hub assemblies during my GT rebuild, I had my sub-frame on the ground though. 😀

I go at it first thing in the morning - I have an impact wrench with a 19mm hex for the bolt. Wish me luck.
@notwise ,
I tried a 3/4" drive impact gun on both the Bentley and my Audi A8L W12, no go, I just recently lost the passenger front axle right out of the transmission on the A8L , the outer CV joint broke at speed, and the axle flew out taking the output shaft right out of the transmission...
So, it took the1/2" drive breaker bar shown in the picture, along with a 4' piece of pipe for leverage, I actually stood on it.
Then on top of that headache, the pinch bolt snapped, a little drilling and drive punching drove it out.
Good luck tomorrow !!
We are here for you.

Right side.. done and dusted! Needed a 24" breaker bar for the driveshaft bolt - disconcerting to be putting that level of force, but it came loose. Thank you for the expert guidance. Now for the left side. What can go wrong?
Got my axle off last night. Tried 25" breaker bar with 5ft extension and no go. Sheared the socket instead. Then, as last resort, I applied a little heat using my acetylene welder together with my impact driver and it came off. These bolts are no fun to remove
Bearings were rattling lose inside boot CV shaft broken lose My new favorite tool The dreaded center bolt Used screwdriver trick instead while removing center bolt 1/2" impact gun did the job, together with carefully applying some heat and not mess up wheel bearing. Actually, there was no other choice.
