At a loss here. I have a 2008 GTC and recently the trunk would not latch shut. My mechanic removed the mechanism and powered it to discover the plastic gears are stripped. Ok. So we install a new latch mechanism and now the trunk/boot will latch, but then it will unlatch and re-open... They can't figure it out. What the heck is going on here.
Note: we also installed a new "house" battery as well. So fed up with this car. Possibly the biggest POS ever made.
I am only able to offer that I had a similar problem on my 2013 GTC, which the trunk kept opening. It turned out to be remedied
by tightening some bolts. I had other issues with bolts loosening causing problems with the convertible top.
I am inclined to agree that these cars are a nightmare, over engineered, not particularly handling well, but simply beautiful.
I'll get rid of it in due course, but primarily because of the lack of being able to service it outside of the dealer for anything other
than routine maintenance. The problem is aggravated by the extortionist pricing by the dealer for parts sold to the independent dealers,
and some of the independent shops here refusing to use parts I supply.
I have the same problem with my 2007 GTC except my top was down when it decided to start that. It powers down, powers the latch mechanism, gets fully latched then waits 3-5 second then reverses and fully raises. The top will not go up with the truck open or in this case confirmed it is latched down. I purchased a brand new OEM latch assy. it worked 2-3 times and allowed me to get the top back up then stopped again. I think there must be a limit switch or something in the circuit to confirm totally closed/latched. I posted about this problem back on 8/27/22. Seems every time I get the car out there is something else to fix. I have not gotten around to sorting out the truck problem because of other issues. It seems there was someone on the forum that had a similar problem maybe with a coupe and the dealer took it around to the service dept. and came back in a few minutes with it working so they thought it was something minor. I have adjusted the latch assembly several times but no changes. I am in Memphis and have to take it 200 miles to the dealer. A local indy shop said they would look at it but then told me they won't wont touch anything electrical unless they replace both batteries for $1100. Mine stays on dual battery tinder and batteries are new anyway so a year later still have the trunk just pushed down. Sorry not much help yet. Let me know if you get it figured out and I will do the same.
Thank you,
Bob
Thanks for the replies.
Current status. The latch assembly was adjusted and the problem persists.
The shop was already replacing the aux battery and then called a day later stating the main battery is at 30% capacity and we are changing that out, too. I'm pretty certain this will not fix the problem. edit: We bought the car with battery condition unknown, so this doesn't really irk me all that much.
I've read on this and various forums that tightening some bolts fixes this and I'm really curious about which bolts these are... It's like no one wants to disclose this information. Every post is "I tightened some bolts and it works"... WELL WHICH BOLTS
Hello @fhlh002 ,
May I ask if you simply pressed the trunk lid down to force it to close at the last inch or so, or are they just letting it do its own thing with no interaction ?
After I retrofitted the bootlid lift close motor to my GT, it did the same thing a few times, and at one point it did the same with just the skinny little wires of the battery tender laying across the gasket, so I had to help it close, once I helped it twice, it never needed help again, it closes as it should, so I believe that it is learning it points of opened and closed.
Many mystery issues are cleared by installing fresh batteries. It is a known condition.
Discovering this. Simply charging batteries is not enough. They need to be fully tested and if no longer good, replaced. I saw this kind of behavior with many a BMW I have owned.
