Yup, I'll echo what everyone else has already said. 12-13 mpg average with commute that is mostly highway, 10 or fewer mpg on weekends.

M5: 12mpg, Annual cost= 250 gal x $4.00= $1000

So for $715 I can drive the M5....now this is a lame analysis because the cost of ownership is obviously higher considering depreciation and insurance added to the calculation. The point is with those costs considered, I really don't give a rat's **** about the price of gas....given the total cost of ownership with few miles driven the additional fuel costs to own the M5 is pretty much negligible.

My 0.02.

The more miles you pile on the greater the $ difference. Your 3,000 miles a year on a car is well below the national avg around 15K miles.

The bigger downer for me is how often you need to head to the gas station. It would totally bug me mentally that I have to visit the gas station so often and pay so much so often for a damn sedan I'd commute in.

I take it the M6 is the same given same engine... but I udnerstand it's a little bit lighter. Man, this pretty much turns me off to the V10 Ms. And the fact that BMW wont' CPO these cars?

Yea I drive mine to work sometimes and even with most of it highway it is a quarter of a tank. I can only imagine a longer commute with fill ups every other day.

Think of it this way...if you can spend 100k on a car...look for a nicely discounted 08 sitting on a lot and pick you up a Honda Civic as a commuter. It makes those sunny days even better.

Good lord, I had no idea they were that bad.

Makes me wonder how the new M3's stack up in gas mileage compared to these.

I said it was a bad example...so it is $3500 difference per year for those very few that actually put 15k per year on their M5/6 and would actually consider a Prius as an alternative. Realistically you are probably looking at something that is 12mpg versus 25mpg....so that is only $2700.

Here is another one....I pay under $800 per year in full coverage insurance. How about those people who pay 2500-3000 per year? Once again, if you can afford $100k car...is $3500 per year going to stop you from buying it? If you are worried about that, you should be more worried about the $20k in first year depreciation.

Then again, I keep hearing about this supposed recession we are in.....even though we had 2% growth last qtr. I guess I should nut up for a 911 turbo....they get better mileage so I hear

M3 is about 18mpg mixed. so about 5mpg better than M5.

the mpg is alright but i guess the small tank makes it annoying. reminds me of the very early RX300 we owned. at least it makes sense in a M car for a little lighter weight.

About 14 mpg mixed driving, 10-11 if I stand on it. M3's aren't much better.
Tank is pitifully small (18 gal).

^^^^^^ I'd love to get 10-11 if i stand on it. Seriously it gets about 7-8 in super hard driving. Medium say about 9 mpg and if you give it to your grandma maybe she can get 12-14 highway

Pretty sure I'm not your grandma.
Don't have much opportunity to really stand on it. If I do, it's short bursts. I do drive through cities very slowly. My car is so loud, I'm a bit fearful the popo will pull me over.

Let's strictly stick to the fuel economy aspect of things v. bringing in insurance and all that other misc **** that takes the argument into a totally stupid place. Let me take it to another stupid place.

I do agree in that I too don't give a rat's **** about fuel economy in a big V10 car that goes stinkin' fast. It's a luxury item. The Prius is a utility car. it's a clear fuel economy winner in the market and is far more affordable than your bad **** BMW M 5-series.

The thing that's totally stupid about all of this is the frequency in which you will find yourself at a damn gas station which is not a pleasant place to be.

Assuming 160 miles per tank M5 avg as mentioned here and assuming 500 miles a tank on avg in the Prius (44mpg, 12 gallonish tank), you'll be hitting up your local Shell ~75 times per year in front of your super executive sexy m5 as compared to ~23 times in the hollywood celeb beloved, green happy prius.

That's a whopping 50+ more times you'll be hob-knobbing with society's best and taking a good whiff of that gasoline in the M5.

Assuming you spend about 10-minutes at the station, that's an additional 8 hours (half a day total for the M5) of your precious life per year standing there picking your nose as your own petro attendant for that precious M car.

the m5's gas tank size is absolutely ridiculous. for me, mentally, 14mpg is just too low. i gotta hang around at least 18-20mpg on avg to make this OK for the psyche. the frequent chevron visits would only exacerbate the annoyance.

P.S. And we all would bet big that the next m5/6 is going to feature significantly better gas mileage hovering, i would wager, on 19-20mpg mixed use (turbo, dfi?). that would absolutely kill the v10 m5's resale value + the fact that BMW won't CPO these bad boys which is another booger for the current m5.
