E60 M5 owners: Whats your MPG?

Just a couple comments in reponse to the posts here so far:
- No one is complaining about the fuel economy of their M5 in this thread. The OP asked what mpg we were getting so everyone chimed in.
- Fuel economy doesn't matter if the enjoyment you get outweighs the cost. Reading GT3Ranger's posts here, the guy absolutely loves his ASR M5 and it shows in how he talks about it! Why does someone buy a $100k car and spend $50k modifying it, whether it is a Porsche, a BMW or a Benz? Because the enjoyment he gets out of it outweighs the cost. Same thing. If you want to play (4100 lb family sedan that does a quarter mile in the 12's), then you pay, and in the case of the E60 M5, that means you have a 5 liter, 500 hp V-10 that drinks a lot of gas.
- Fuel economy does matter for some people. So, they don't buy the car even if they can afford to do so. But if some people don't buy the car for that reason, then BMW has to think about the economics of their product and address, or at least consider, the mpg concern that those potential buyers had.
- The tank is small, and you will visit the gas station a lot. But, honestly, who cares?? There are bigger and better things to be upset about! Ask 1,000 people this question: If you were able to own an M5, would you fret over going to the gas station twice as much in a year as a Prius owner? Having an M5 is a lucky thing, and therefore, visiting a gas station a lot is a good problem to have.
- You can't have it all. People are comparing the M5 to Porsche and their DFI engine and fuel economy. A 911 is not a 4100 pound, solid sedan with a V-10. You can't just take the mpg of a 911 and say that the M5, for what it is, should have something similar.

Well said. As for my M6 I get anywhere from 11 mpg to 13 mpg depending on my driving habits. When I bought this car I knew about the mpg and the tank size. If I had concerns I would have bought a more frugal car in relation to gas sippage.
If you drive the S85 engine correctly you will never get good mileage.

Worry? Correction. I'm providing constructive feedback as shared by others that a piddling 160 mile range is absolutely ridiculous in a 4-door commuter style sedan. With technology and innovation, it's clear that BMW will improve mpg in its next M5 iteration. You know why Porsche put in DFI and all that other fancy schmancy move forward stuff? It's because it's no longer socially cool to be driving around in gas guzzling cars. Being that the M brand and Porsche overall is a complete toy/luxury badge, BMW/Porsche and others MUST show salient efforts that they, too, appreciate the limited resources of this world and they're being forced not by just our whim alone (the consumers), but also by strict EU and US and A FEDERAL emissions/efficiency LAWS and POLICIES that are coming down the pike.

I don't understand why BMW can't build an 500 HP engine that can get half way desent gas mileage when Chevy can build a 7 litre V8 that can claim about 25 ish mpg a gal. Someone please tell what is wrong with this picture?

benjamin, the 160 mile range is only if you're constantly driving in city traffic. my personal commute is only 18 miles roundtrip and if i drove the car everyday, i wouldn't have to fill up in over a week. if you do a lot of highway driving, mpg goes way up. there are some m5board members that claim to have gotten 24mpg. i think that's pretty optimistic, but someone recently did a long highway drive and got 396 miles out of a tank.
regarding being socially cool to have a gas guzzler, i don't think coolness has anything to do with it. sure there's a minor green movement in recent years, but i don't think people are buying 4-bangers because they want to save the environment. it may be true that people are very conscious about gas consumption, but again, it has nothing to do with being socially acceptable.
