I am talking about vanos failure issues, rear subframe failures and the other common trouble spots.

What do you mean by "Worked Out"? Obviously the E46 M3 isnt in production anymore so BMW isnt working on "fixes" for some of the troublesports. Are you looking for aftermarket improvements?

VANOS failures were common on early E36 M3's but they are not all that common on the E46. The rear subframe bushing issue has some aftermarket fixes. I think the Internet has exaggerated the likelihood of a rear subframe failure. I know a number of people with M3's and no one has had one. People with problems tend to be very vocal while people with no problems tend to be pretty quiet and just enjoy their cars.

If you're looking to buy an E46 M3 your best bet is to make sure you find one with lower mileage, a fully documented service history and get a proper inspection done by a shop that knows how to identify the M3 issues.

Also, the SMG tranny has experienced alot of problems as well.

But when it works, it works!

The E46 appeals to me much more so than the E92 or E90 simply because of its nature. The high strung 6 banger over displacement. I love them both but I just like the lines of the E46 so much more.

The E90 V8 revs higher than the straight six, and produces exactly the same HP per litre. It's just as high strung and it sounds amazing.

I love the E46 M3, but I have always felt it sounded pretty mediocre for such an amazing car.

There is no other car that sounds like the E46 M3.... It's rare to hear but it sounds fantastic when one is blasting past you.

E46 m3

In the past 9 years we have not seen any E46 M3 vanos failures. And we have yet to see a E46 M3 subframe failure. Now in the past 16 months we have seen 12 E46 subframe problems BMW took care of all of them none were M3's. On the E46 vanos failures seems that was the M54 engines had that failure M3's not so much.
