I would guess around $50,000 I haven't done much research on these cars lately.

Paul S is infamous around these parts
E39 M5 didn't have 'sports package'
That car would be high 30's low 40's pp, mid 40's CPO dealer

Luis, proceed with caution my neighbor has a 2000 E39 M5 and is having trouble with carbon buildup in the cylinder heads. I helped him by getting onto www.m5board.com and sure enough there's a sticky on carbon buildup... an $8,000 repair that BMW wants no part of.

I would imagine there's quite a few M5's for sale due to this issue.

This car has a "sportier" steerigng wheel than a 00 model I drove. The dealer told me it was a "sports package" upgrade? Are the sterrting wheels different from 00 to 01?

I can't be certain that it was cleared up for MY 2001. It's good to know you're well informed by being on the M5 board, just want to you know what the potential risks are.

Here's response #47 to the "poll on carbon buildup issue" the respondant has MY 2001...

Re: POLL ON CARBON BUILD-UP ISSUE - ALL MEMBERS PLEASE READ

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Have you had the carbon build-up issue? YES!!
2. If the answer to #1 was 'yes', please list the fault code(s) associated with the issue, if known. THE SERVICE INVOICE SAYS, "CUSTOMER SAYS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED...FC 170 IS RETRIEVED...REMOVED BOTH CYLINDER HEADS...DISASSEMBLE BOTH CYLINDER HEADS AND CLEAN OUT SECONDARY AIR PORTS...REASSEMBLE CYLINDER HEADS AND INSTALL."
3. If the answer to #1 was 'yes', how was the issue resolved? Was the cost covered in full or in part by BMW (or 3rd party warranty?) THE CAR WAS UNDER THE ORIGINAL FACTORY WARRANTY SO BMW PAID IN FULL.
4. Build Date/Model Year of my car:HOW DO I FIND THE BUILD DATE? THE DELIVERY DATE WAS JULY 20, 2001. MODEL YEAR 2001.
5. Mileage of my car: 21k NOW; WORK DONE TO REMOVE CARBON AT 17k MILES.
6. Approximate oil consumption of my car: 1 QT PER 1,000 MILES
7. My geographic location: HONOLULU ITS ENTIRE LIFE
8. My driving habits : B
9. Typical gasoline that I use in my car: 91 OCTANE
10. Typical oil that I use in my car:MOBIL ONE 5-30

Ask him to show you the window sticker, ask him where the sports package is.
Dealer is full of crap. New steering wheel for '01 as well as the Angel Eye headlights.
