Best performance sedan/coupe for under $40k?

Hi guys,

I am trying to help my brother choose a used car for under $45k, so I thought I would ask you guys what you think of his choices.

He wants a daily driver car that can do almost everything. He also wants to find a car that has been modded quite a bit, so he can save money from having to do it himself. His primary needs are as follows:

1. Great acceleration and handling
2. Good modability
3. Needs a backseat to carry his two kids (5 and 8)
4. Reasonable maintenance cost and reliable
5. Good for the occassional HPDEs

He is considering the following cars:

1. BMW e46 M3 Dinan S2
2. BMW e39 M5 Dinan S2
4. Audi S4 V8
5. Mitsubishi Evo MR w/ lots of mods
6. Subaru STI

What do you think? Did I leave off any other good candidates?

Thanks

300 SRT8, cheap to maintain, hauls ***, and tons of room. Otherwise you're most likely talking used for the first 3 options, and lots to maintain, and the last two aren't that comfortable and small. The SRT8 is a dynamite bang for the buck....and it is ok to own an American car

I can't believe he'd even consider a coupe with a 5 and an 8 y.o.

What makes you thik that these three cars.... E46 M3 S2.......and E 39 M5 S2......S4 A8 can be had for less then $45K.
I just picked up a '98 E36 M3-4 AA stage 11 ( Turbocharged ) with 10K miles for under $40K....The car makes 350 at the wheels on low boost 8/8 psi and 420+ at the wheels on high boost of 13/14 psi.....

DAMN IT.... EVEN AFTER 2 YEARS I AM STILL NOT PRIVILIGED ENOUGH TO POST THE DAMN PICTURES.....

Since you posted this thread in the BMW ///M section, so I would choose

1. BMW e46 M3 Dinan S2
2. BMW e39 M5 Dinan S2

I'd go for the either the M5 or the S4. Drive both, and see which one works best.

I've got a Dinan S2 M5 and its a perfect daily driver. I'd take that over the S2 M3 for daily driver as the 4 doors really do come in handy.

As far as finding one under $45k, that might be tough. I certainly paid more for mine - but you never know when you'll stumble on a great deal.

My friend had the V8 S4 and it was nice, but wasn't a very exciting car to drive. Also for being on a budget and wanting modability those two japanese cars are hard to beat. In the end though I personally prefer the bimmers with the overall nod to the M5.

E39 M5 if you have kids, more room than the other car

Why only Dinan?

Ag Surfer: How much? What is next?
