and i agree with a larger displacement they couldve gotten to the 415 mark thats in the V8 with a bored out I6, a V8 is kinda the easy way out...
There have been a number of complaints leveled at the E92 M3 from people who have driven the car, but the engine hasn't been one of them. I hardly think building an 8400rpm V8 that makes over 100hp/l and weighs less than their former I6 is taking the easy way out, but to each their own.

Another thing is the weight, why so heavy? a CF roof a lighter engine and other weight saving material and still an added 250lbs... this is supposed to be a track car, and a track car at near 2 tons... will suffer terribly in its handling characteristics
I am not happy about the weight gain either, but the number is 85kg (~190lb) not 250lb. It weighs roughly the same as a 997TT.

Porsche and Ferrari are imo the ONLY car makers out there who are sticking to making cars for a purpose and for a specfic group of people (who can afford ferraris as well) and the M division used to be this group, they are making this M for the masses and like you said, its to satisfy everyone...
I am with you and this one, although BMW has committed to more CSL cars, and I suppose the new CSL "brand" will replace the "M" brand for the hardcore, but let's hope all of those models make it to the US. :-)

I see no advantage at all.... and don't say M3's "should always have 6's"... remember they started with the S14 (4 banger).

I question many things in this car, but the motor is not one of them. I think it will be the gem of this car.
The sound, balance and throttle responce of the flat six can't be matched by a V8 IMO (exclude Ferrari). BMW claimed that they couldn't develop the I6 any further because they were already revving too much and the linear speed of the pistons was already too high (although I think the RS4 achieves higher). But I wonder why they didn't try to increase displacement.

This is my edited part im just adding something:

i just saw that 335's are running mid 12's with a few simple mods... wow that hurts the new M3 already, straight line speed e92 M3's are running HIGH HIGH 12's...12.9 is the best ive seen thus far and a few simple mods which will be VERY expensive are going to yield gains, but not to the degree the 335 will have, might as well buy an 335 and put M3 parts on it and have a faster car that looks the same, im sure many many people will start doing that shortly after the M3 bows its head
My thoughts exactly. BMW handicapped the 335 deliberately by not offering an LSD and locking the DME with such a strong encryption.

I didn't think I would like the E92M.
But they have grown on me.
