New stereo for 987 ?

Just picked up a RS60 last week, which had the Bose oem unit. Overall, ity pretty much blows. I know that I should just be listening to engine, but has anyone replaced oem system? Recommendations? Thanks!

I mix and produce records for a living and I love my 2007 Boxster S Bose unit. I use it to check mixes on. I think you may have it set wrong for whatever music you are listening to on it. It doesn't sound great for Classical but for Hip Hop and Rock it is very good. For Hip Hop raise the Bass to 8 and dip the Treb -1 and the sub should be 12 (If I remember correctly). For Rock try the Bass at 7 and the Treb at -4. Peace, Mark

It sounds like crap in stock form. Put in a Kenwood dnx8120, replace the door subs and component with a really good component system, add in a 5 channel amp and you will be amazed at the difference. The standard Bose woofer in the passenger foot well is surprisingly adequate considering it is smaller then a 6x9, and the standard rear speakers are good enough to balance out the front ones being 2ohms helps with the power handling abilities. The 5 channel I went with the alpine PDX-5, and the Kenwood was a recommendation to me that I was hesitant on at first. I love how amazing the sound quality of the Alpine head units but the 8120 is on par with them, and defiantly is better in the navigation department. The component system I used was a Boston Acoustics Pro 60SE, it’s a 6 ¾. The door subs that come with it stock are a joke. Tuning it when done is the most critical part so don’t take it to a hack shop.

Btw you can even ask the dealers what they think of stock systems and most who are truthful will remind you of the fact that even Toyotas and Fords at least come with I Ipod adapters.

I agree, Bose sucks and I ordered my new car without it. Just remember you can't replace just one piece in a bose system :-(

Thanks for the input. Actually had a 2001 Boxster, and put a multiple amp/equalizer component speaker system in. Sounded awesome, but I paid for it $$$$$. I was hoping that the Bose system would be tweekable, but sounds like I may need to bite the bullet and go see the guys at my audio shop!!

I have an RS 60 with Bose + navigation unit and can’t find a separate setting for Sub.

Could someone help?

Ellwer - Can you post a pic of your setup? I'm looking into changing mine. Nothing crazy, I wanted to have a DVD face unit. Any recommendations?

*Mine is not Bose.

Sloopy: I don't seem to have a separate control either. Not sure if the sub control chanaged from earlier versions of stereo?

Boosted twin: I have not upgraded my system yet; the multiply equalizer/amp unit was on my 2001 Boxster that I sold. Should have taken the system out!

Congrats on the RS60. Beautiful car.

It's not an easy fix due to the use fiber optics in the Bose system

I think a couple of the folks over at the caymanclub website have done it, but I don't think it was cheap.

Just replace the head unit, and pop in a 5ch amp. You will be amazed with the difference in clarity. The speakers are actually ok, but the amp and CDR23 are crap. Most people will either go all or nothing with the upgrade and at least put in a good component system. Its one of those things that the sound quality will either bother you, or you will not notice or just deal with it. Personally I would rather put money into a ruf exhaust, it’s a Porsche, not a escalade! A family member of mine bought a Cayman and plays around with the blue tooth in the stereo more then actually driving it. It got to the point where I was driving around with them and they were calling people for no reason at all, plus the quality of the blue tooth is crap and you have to yell. I got pist and said, this isn’t a giant 3000lb yellow cell phone, it’s a Porsche that was built to be driven, not talked to.

Yeah that does sound very appealing, but that statement is also counterintuitive to the original subject. Sound quality changes dramatically with the top down. One nice feature with the Kenwood is it allows great sound imaging and actually raising and lowering of the sound field in relation to your ear. That may come in handy with the top down. The part that gets some people is that upgrading the sound in a Porsche is just like any other upgrade for a Porsche, expensive! The main expense being the labor. If you let circuit city tear into it (which they are not allowed to do now due to liability reasons) you will be sorry! One of the biggest issues with upgrading the sound in any P car is that the cab is just horrible for acrostics.
