Extended Warranty Recommendations?

I've done a lot of searches on this forum and others and I am still a little lost as to what I can get for an extended warranty.

Here's my situation:

- 2003 C2 Coupe w/ tip
- 25,000 miles
- Minor mods: PSE, PSS9, K&N air filter, body kit, wheels
- Do all my own routine maintenance since I bought it 3 years ago
- Factory warranty expired more than a year ago
- No problems so far

It seems like these cars are much harder than I thought to find a warranty if it's already outside manufacturer's warranty.

My favorite from the past, Warranty Direct, says on their website they won't cover it for that reason. I may try calling them and see what they say over the phone.

I am looking for a warranty that will cover the big ticket items like block issues, IMS, RMS, transmission problems. It would be nice if it covers the A/C, but that and just about anything else I can fix myself for a reasonable price. I just don't want to be stuck with $12-15K for a tranny or engine.

Anyone have any experience with a good warranty that meets these specs?

Thanks!

I've been considering a extended warranty as well for my 02. I'll be interested to see what others have to say. I just had the tranny rebuilt in mine so I don't blame you at all for considering one!

I have an Advantage warranty from a company called Protective, which is about a 100 year old insurance company. I have made 2 claims with no problems at all. It is an exclusionary policy, meaning everything is covered except for items listed as not covered.

I had the CV boots and a wheel bearing done under their warranty.

Thanks. Is it www.protective.com?

Looks like only dealers sell the warranty. Did you buy it with the car at the time?

As someone who works in the automotive field as a Service Writer, I strongly recommend you do not go with an extended warranty unless you purchase it thru Porsche. I have had many dealings with aftermarket companies and have found that they rarely cover anything, if anything at all. Not all companies are bad, just most from what I've found. I understand completely the want for a policy, but be very careful when you purchase one. Too many bad experiences with them for me to even consider one not factory.

Just my .02 cents...

Greg

p.s. Hit me up with a company if you find one and I will gladly look at the policy coverage you desire and share some possible concerns. You can email me at greg@clovisgarage.com or send me a PST on the boards here. I am an actual Service Consultant and have almost daily if not weekly dealings with these said companies.

p.s.s. Edit: Spelling

Protective is the company I bought from.

Greg, here is a link to what is covered. I have the advantage coverage, so it includes the items in red. When you get a minute I would love to know what you think. RMS is going to need replacing soon and it looks like it will be covered.

I must say thanxbabe, that is one of the most inclusive policies I have seen. With that said, I'd like to take a look at the exclusions section if at all possible. They note at the bottom exclusionary items are not covered. I'd find out if a said exclusionary item fails and takes out an included item, will both be covered? Only the included item? I've seen companies weasel out of paying due to those very reasons. I have also personally seen them get out of paying due to "technicallities" on verbage. We had a Toyota Sequoia enter the shop a few weeks ago and their policy covered struts and upper strut mount related issues/failures. Low and behold, because Toyota calls them shocks and shock mounts for this and only this vehicle, they were not covered because the said company only covers "struts". Its things like this that make me personally very "iffy" on buying a said policy. If I may inquire, what is the deductible per issue/failure? Also, what was the initial cost? You can send me a private message if you dont want the whole board to know, but I am interested personally. It seems you got a decent deal based upon what I see, but like I said, I need slightly more information to accuratly gauge it. I personally have not had dealings in my area with this company so no bad experiences with them to note.

Greg

p.s. Once again, feel free to email me at greg@clovisgarage.com if you'd prefer that over a private message.

p.s.s. Another thing to note is if you have ANY modifications on the vehicle, take them off before going to the dealer/shop. Dealer for obvious reasons, but these insurance companies have the right to come and inspect your vehicle if they so choose before covering even a coverable item. I've once again seen things not covered due to aftermarket parts on a vehicle such as an intake and the company said that without the "racing modifications", the MAF sensor would not have failed... I had one very unhappy S2000 owner!

Gregg,

I do not think that breakdowns to covered items that are caused by excluded items are covered. I will double check that and get you the exclusions to the policy.

The typical deductible is $100. They also have limits for things like alignments, so if the price for the alignment exceeds their rate, you pay the difference (Alignment at Champion is $249 and company pays $229 max so I am $20 out of pocket)

I don't recal exactly what I paid for the policy, but I think it was $2400 or $2500 for 2 years or 24K miles of coverage (fairly expensive as these things go, but you get what you pay for). My wife got me the car as a b-day gift (hence the handle thanks babe). I paid for the warranty because used cars make her nervous and this is my first p-car. From my reading and the dealers reading of the coverage, RMS and IMS issues are covered so essentially I got it as a 2 year hedge agains the dreaded IMS failure.

I have $0 deductible Warranty Direct, with the dealer handles the claims and negotiations for me. I have been pretty happy. It saved me from RMS, coolant leak, fuel injection etc problems. The saving outweighs the cost (~$3000 for 4 years/50000miles) in my case.

I suggest extended warranty if you got your car used and didn't know how its previous owner used it (even thought it passed PPI and looked good). Bottom line is, if you wanna pay the insurance for a period of couple years, or you have rainy-day fund in case repairs are needed for your car.

Wish my wife bought me one... I dont think she can afford a Carrera GT currently though...

It seems you got a good deal thnxbabe. As i stated already, Im just letting the community know to be careful with these companies due to some of them being a headache and a half. For me personally, when I do buy my Porsche, (this year) it will be my first Porsche and I myself will get an extended warranty. By the sounds of it, you will not exceed the start up cost of the warranty, which is a gamble when you buy them, but the peace of mind is huge! Good buy imho thnxbabe and if there are anymore questions I can answer, feel free to contact me.

Lolayay... I agree fully that if you buy a Porsche used, buy it from a dealer preferably and get a warranty. However you raise a very good point and that point relates to the "gamble" I speak of above. Put the money in the savings and chance it, or possibly pay too much money for something you never use and have bad experiences with. I for one will go with the warranty via Porsche dealer, but its up to each individual to decide.

To anyone else reading this,

My offer still stands! As an ASE certified Service Writer, if anyone wants to know anything or has questions about one of their policies like thnxbabe did, feel free to send me a private message or post here and i will do my best to answer the questions.

Greg

I'd really like to get the extended warranty sold by Porsche, if I can. They seem to sell the Easycare plan.

The problem is that I am getting conflicting information from dealers. One told me that it can't be sold unless the car is under warranty already, and another told me that it's just by miles.

Both are now saying I can get the warranty, but I am doubting it's true.

Has anyone bought an Easycare warranty from the Porsche dealership after the car was out of warranty?

Thanks!

I would see service manager at the dealer you get your car serviced recommends (if you have a good relationship with him) and see what plans he has dealt with and what ones he hates.
