Gtech RR for DE lap - segment timer
Gtech RR for DE lap - segment timer
Any experience with this model?
http://www.gtechpro.com/rr_fanatic.html
All I found through searching was members talking about sprint times, hp, etc, but not any lap or segment time usage.
Not interested in a phone app with 10 hz external GPS.
Also not interested in traqmate.
Trying to stay at that price point or below. Features look great
Thanx

It looks like it should work great. The software is very similar to Harry's Lap Timer or Racechrono. I am not sure why you are reluctant to use a phone app GPS though. Both of the ones I have used were excellent and accurate to .05 sec. when compared with the transponder timing. With Harry's and an ipod touch you can do lap timing and video simultaneously, and they are edited together as a finished product right away. Not bad for a total investment of $60. Here is a 1 lap vid with timing:

All are great learning tools. I highly recommend using one.

1) I don't have or plan to buy apple products to use Harry's. And I have my reasons for not using a phone while I'm having fun at the track; ON or OFF.
2) I want to easily set segment times so I know where I did what.
I'm glad you're getting times to that level. That means your line work is consistent.
For me a 1 HZ GPS as implied by your $60 (I know Harry's = $20, not sure what the other $40 buys) figure implies a positional differential of 88' per sec at 60 mph. My line work isn't that consistent yet.

The Trackmaster app for Android phones also works great and will allow segment times to be set. I have several friends who use it and love it.
I know nothing about the unit you posted. The AiM Solo or Qstarz Q6000 are in the same price range if you want to look at other units. Both have a 10Hz sampling rate.

See color coding. Unless you have a link with better pricing that I couldn't find through google.
Aim Solo also requires purchase of another mount (+$75) unless you want to screw in the included mount. I prefer not to screw this into my car.

The other system I use is Racechrono with a used ASUS 626 PDA and 5hz GPS receiver. Position accuracy is usually within 1 meter and timing accuracy within .03 second. Total investment $100. This has been tested and proven over 2 years, 50 track days and two TT championships.
The belief that we need 10hz to get accurate timing results is simply a misunderstanding.
The stand alone Racechrono 5hz unit is also very good and proven over 2 years of use: http://racechrono.com.au/

If you are anti-Apple I get that. Harry's GPS laptimer is very good though. By using the Tom Tom mount ($40) and microprocessor interpolation, an app based timer gives high positional accuracy and timing within .05 second.

I just don't want to take a phone with me when I go to a DE. Its my time to have fun, relax and leave everyday stresses behind. That means no phone. Messages, etc can wait til I'm back home.
Thank you for that Asus option. I will have to look into that.
But now I'm a little confused. This whole time I thought you were talking about the racechrono mobile app: http://www.racechrono.com/

The Racechrono stand alone dash incorporates the receiver, software, and electronics into a simple to use GPS laptimer/data logger package and is currently sold in limited distribution mostly in Australia. One of my Boxster TT buddies has the stand alone unit and loves it (and he is getting a lot faster now). I am cheap and resourceful so I still use the PDA.
Whichever choice you make, a GPS lap timer will reveal a great deal of information about your driving, where you are consistent, and where you are leaving time on the table

OP is not interested in this unit. I offered to sell mine to him, but he chose to insult me instead. I did sell my unit shortly afterwards to a fellow forum member who saw my postings. The Racechrono unit works as advertised, but I decided to move onto HLT because the interface is more intuitive and robust. But I'd better stop before OP begins to berate me again...

GPS lap timer/data loggers are the bomb! While I still think Racechrono gives more detailed track analysis, an ipod touch (no phone) + Harry's + Tom Tom mount gives you instant lap and sector times, data and lap video sewn together. A pretty slick learning tool that anyone can use.
