Daily Drivers?
Daily Drivers?
Hello, I'm wondering how many use there Boxster / Cayman as daily transportation? If so what do you think of it? How do they do for daily commuting tasks like rush hour traffic, around town driving, going to the grocery store, etc? I know thats not what these cars were designed for but an unfortunate part of daily driving.
My car is a total garage queen that only leaves when Weather Channel says there's no chance of rain.
I would think the car would be a fine DD as it drives as well as anyone could hope and visibility is excellent.

I use a Boxster S as a daily driver, no problem at all.
Unlike many other sport cars manufacturers, Porsche actually designs their cars for daily use. They behave great under daily driving conditions.
It's not like older Ferrari models with ridiculous requirements for warming up the engine and so on. Or risk of overheating in rush hour traffic jams... A Porsche will not suffer from being used as a daily driver, as long as you treat it with normal respect.
Also, isn't that the great thing about driving a Porsche: Spicing up your daily life, not only your weekends or the occasional track day? I love walking into the garage every morning to see the car waiting for me. It's a great way to start a day!

My wife uses the CR as her DD. It's fine for that, except that she doesn't like parking it in crowded parking lots, where someone might damage it intentionally or unintentionally. But that concern applies to any expensive car.
I use my CR as a daily driver and have had no problem. If the weather is really bad I will drive my Cayenne instead. The Cayenne primarily collects dust. I love my CR to much.

Boxster is a great daily driver. The two trunks can even make the occasional Costco run, pretty good gas mileage, no problems in traffic.
Surprisingly, it even handles great in wet weather. My wife and I years ago took a trip to Palm Springs where downpours caused major standing water and flooding, my 986 was going steadily faster than any suv/4x4 on the highway!

Anyone drive theirs in the the dreaded "S" word (snow)? Except for this past winter Michigan usually has some periods of heavy snow. The wife travels alot for work and she has an SUV so Id most likely drive that on bad days when shes not home, but still good to know.
I did drive an 08 Boxster yesterday, Im pretty impressed. Fair storage space and cabin room, very tight, nice growl from the engine and steering and brakes were excellent. I can see where this could be a decent DD. But how much maintenance do they require?

Summary: perfectly OK to use on well maintained roads during winter, but leave it at home when it snows heavily!
My wife drives our Boxster to work. She works only 20km from home so km do not get racked up. I take my turn driving the car on the weekend. My wife absolutely loves it as we got a tiptronic version.
We will definitely not drive the car in the winter.

I put 50k on my old Cayman and have 16600 miles on my current Cayman S (that I've owned all of 9 months). They make great daily drivers. And I did drive mine in the winter as well. A good set of snows will get you through most everything except the deep stuff.
I had an 08 CS which I used for a daily driver for close to 3 years putting 29,000 miles on it. It was GREAT. I now have the 2012 CR that I use as a daily driver and have put 2,000 miles on it as such and it is GREAT Plus
both are 6MT and a fair amount of stop and go for the commute home each day..........love to hear the engine wind up a bit, especially in the CR with Sport Chrono and PSE engaged.

Wow, more DD's out there than I'd have thought, cool. Anyone also track their DD's? Id like to get out a couple time per year. Also is there normally a little shutter when taking off from a stop in a manual? The one I was seemed to want to be revved at take off or it had a little shudder, it wasnt bad and I didnt notice it any other time. Wondering if thats how they all are, I assume these arent super torquey cars?
I actually bought the 09 Boxster for daily since the M5 is killing me on gas..haha!!
I dont usually go in the office daily, but when I do it's always a fun drive..especially with the weather right now...
