Advice regarding dealer availability
Hello all,
I have been a lurker on this forum and am seriously considering buying a cayman s as a daily driver. My present car is a BMW 135i and its time to return it back [Lease]. I work in eastern KY and have no porsche dealers nearby. The closest is almost 3 hrs away.I cannot stand an automatic and that makes my choice limited . The only two cars that interest me for now are the cayman S and the M5.The M5 would serve the purpose of a family car too but I am still not convinced of a Stick shift on the M5.The cayman though would be nice with a stick shift is limited in the seating dept. The biggest concern for me is that I cant imagine a 6 hr drive[alone] just for servicing if i end up buying a cayman S.I just wanted to know if there is anyone in my situation with no dealers nearby. If so how do you manage your service intervals?
The closest BMW dealership is 90 minutes away and i frequent the city on weekends regardless. So service with the 135 has never been a problem.
I would love to own a porsche but the whole idea of driving 3hrs just to see a dealer seems impractical. Suggestions?

A few points -
1) The M5 and cayman S are such different cars . I just traded my 2011 M3 (manual) for a 13 Boxster S (manual) and in terms of the gearbox the BMW was awful. I had grown accustomed to it as it was my second M3 and the car was very practical and in many ways a great daily driver but the position of the gearshift lever and the sloppy spacing was absolutely atrocious . In contrast the Porsche is buttery smooth, spaced wonderfully, and positioned within comfortable arm reach motion .
2) Distance to dealership -- this is actually a question to table with them at sales and with their service department . See what they suggest . You might even look into local Porsche specific independent mechanics for routine things . Leave major service and warranty repairs to the authorized dealership. Also call Porsche customer relations just to inquire what they recommend . There's no doubt that it will be an inconvenience .
3 hours sounds far but even 90 minutes sounds far to me.

Drove it 2 years with just regular servicing required. The only thing the car needed in 80K miles was an RMS.
I did oil/filter (every 5K miles) and air filter and cabin filter services myself. Just the "scheduled" services did I have done at the dealer.
3 hours is a bit much, though. Have you thought about moving closer to the Porsche dealer. I live about a mile away from one now. Handy. And I attend all the new car intros. Bonus!
Thanks for the response. Finally, Finally someone who agrees with me regarding the stick shift in BMW's.The 135... though an awesome car had an awful jerky stick shift [especially in the lower gears].The dealer felt that it was within the operable norms and didn't bother helping me with it.Its one of those things that I hated about my car.I eventually learned to drive it smooth by working the clutch but was never satisfied. This is why I want to try a porsche this time around. My BMW dealer states that he can get me DCT M5 Testdrive nexy week but was not very eager to get me a Stick shift test car anytime soon. The 90 minute drive works fine as i frequent this place on weekends for errands regardless.Part of living in Rural USA...

My Boxster S is new (only have 1400 miles) . I don't drive my cars alot and have three Porsches (997tt,BoxsterS,and Cayenne) so I tend not to follow the long porsche interval scheduele . I usually opt for 1 year or 5K miles (whichever first).
Porsches intervals are usually around 10K miles or 1 year . If i were leasing the car I would adhere it it but since i buy my cars I tend to be more neurotic with more frequent routine service than suggested .
We are in agreement on the BMW clutch and shifter . My guess is that part of the reason why the dealeship pauses at a manual M5 test drive is because most of the M cars are DCT . I believe its because the BMW manual is that bad . Porsche on the other hand builds world class manual shifter and clutch setup and they also have a world class PDK . One cant lose with either in transmission choices .

I bought an 02 Boxster from a dealer about an hour away (with no traffic).

If i end up buying a porsche I will probably opt to buy it.I am still waiting for a call from the porsche dealer.I mailed them directly about a week ago.The BMW dealer called me the next day. I have no intesrest in a DCT M5 for now ...,, If i had to get a powerful 4000lb sedan I would rather get S6 /Panny 4s.Not a RWD M5.Well first things first... I need to drive one first and i guess its time to call the dealers in Cincinnati.
