B&M installed on boxster

WOW i figured that i would post here for any owners that are on the fence about this mod... Do it.

Install took about 1 hour, as Im usually very careful when doing these things. after taking her around the block and adjusting the cables, my first thought was that this is how the car should have came. All the shifts are crisp and direct. Anyways, figured i would post this up and if any owners need help feel free to ask

oh yea, thanks to jamie for the deal on this too

I thought about one of these but was worried about it not feeling right. Maybe I'll have to look into it some more...

Jack,
I put one on my TT and it felt very mechanical...don't like it.

Although the throw on my Boxster is longer, after the car warms up, it feels like "Butta". I love the feeling. Extremely smooth. Even with all the mods I'm putting on, I don't think that I'll change the shifter out.

by the way, love the color combo. Is the car lowered a bit?

Dave

My Sport Seats are ok, but not great. I believe pre '01 cars got a lower bolstering in the bottom and they are not very comfortable.

Also the Sport Design Interior painted parts are fading, what a crappy paint job Porsche gave us there, but I'm looking to repaint all those pre-painted parts in artic silver or alu-look depending on the steering wheel I'm getting.

If I can get my hands on a TechArt steering wheel without much trouble, then its settle, if not I'll just buy a new one from Brandywine, they have good prices.

Thanks for posting. What are the trade-offs? Notchiness? Less feel (between shift gates)? Shifter position?
TIA.

dave, i know what you mean about the "butta" but after driving the car the past few days, im completely use to it and wouldnt have it any other way. (plus you dont need to shift any faster with that 3.8 )

Frissen, i guess ill just have to save up for the gt3 seats, since the sports arent that great. Oh i just dropped off a center rear console, 3piece strips, and center upper console to get painted artic silver, so ill make sure to post pics once i pic them up.

as far as the trade-offs?? i would have to say the only bad thing about the b&m is the "extra" Minimal effort required when you just feel like puttering around. But the minute your in schumacher mode the mod was completely worth it. Shifting 1-2, is great and 2-3 is really improved. guess thats about it lol

I went a slightly different route. I installed the 996 B&M SSK in my 2000 Boxster S sans the tranny crank adapter which contributes to the shortening of the throw (the adapter doesn't fit anyways, dumb 996 engine and tranny is in backwards). What this SSK does in this case is raise the **** height very close to the center of the steering wheel so hand movement is minimized from the wheel to the shifter. The resulting throw is very close to the stock Boxster throw. The feel is a bit more "crisp" than the stock shifter, but not really noticable when rowing through the gears. I'll take pics if anyone wants.

Jack,
Have been on the fence, took your advice and purchased one. Will install in the next couple of weeks. Already had a EVO billet linkage and figured since that had to be installed may as well do them both at the same time.
Thanks for your info.

Bruinbro, pics would be great! that sounds like an interesting way around messing with the center console

D-UberCars, congrats on the purchase, you'll love it, and especially with time. About the shift linkage, have you ever broken the stock plastic piece? or are you just buying it for a safe mind?

I'll take pics, but I'm not sure what you mean by "way around messing with the center console". This SSK looks just like the "standard" 986 SSK from B&M, just that the shift lever is longer (and has a threaded round end vs the flat end) and also includes an adapter for the tranny to change the cable to crank pivot distance.

That is exactly what I am talking about for the thing that I didn't install. FYI, you could just as easily drill another hole in the crank arm, screw in the new ball fitting and not use the adapter; I'm thinking of doing this later when I have the car on a hoist again.
